Biography & Early Wealth Journey
Formerly credited as Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, she became one of the defining television teen idols of the 1990s as Kelly Kapowski on "Saved by the Bell" and later successfully reinvented herself as Valerie Malone on "Beverly Hills, 90210."
Thiessen's television career has stretched across several decades. After "90210," she starred in "Fastlane," spent six seasons playing Elizabeth Burke on "White Collar," appeared on Netflix's "Alexa & Katie," and reprised Kelly Kapowski in Peacock's "Saved by the Bell" sequel series. She has also built a second career around food and lifestyle programming, hosting and executive producing "Dinner at Tiffani's," hosting MTV's "Deliciousness," and publishing the cookbooks "Pull Up a Chair" and "Here We Go Again."
In 2026, Thiessen was cast as Miss Graves, the formidable head of a supernatural boarding school, in the Freeform series "Coven Academy."
Despite the enormous popularity of "Saved by the Bell," Thiessen has revealed that the show itself was not particularly lucrative for its young cast. She has said she did not begin earning what she considered "real money" until she joined "Beverly Hills, 90210."
Saved by the Bell Salary and Residuals
"Saved by the Bell" made Thiessen famous, but according to Thiessen, it did not make her rich.
Speaking about the show's finances in September 2026, Thiessen said the young cast had essentially no leverage when their contracts were negotiated and earned very little compared with what audiences might assume from the show's enduring popularity.
"We made nothing and we just did our job," she said.

Thiessen explained that the cast received somewhat better compensation when the franchise moved into primetime with "Saved by the Bell: The College Years," but said her financial situation did not materially change until she was cast on "Beverly Hills, 90210" in 1994.
The residual income from "Saved by the Bell" has also largely disappeared. By 2026, Thiessen said she did not believe she was receiving meaningful residual checks from the series anymore, joking that the payments had become so insignificant that it probably cost more to print the check.
Her comments echo those of Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who has previously said the cast made "really bad deals" during the show's original run.
For Thiessen, the financial value of "Saved by the Bell" ultimately came less from the salary or residuals themselves than from the fame it created and the much more lucrative television career that followed.
Early Life
Tiffani Amber Thiessen was born on January 23, 1974, in Long Beach, California. Her mother, Robyn, was a homemaker, while her father, Frank, worked as a landscape architect and park designer. She grew up with two brothers, Todd and Schyler.
Thiessen began modeling and competing in beauty pageants as a child. In 1987, she was named Miss Junior America. The following year, she won "Teen" magazine's Great Model Search, and in 1989, "Cover Girl" magazine named her Model of the Year.
She attended Valley Professional High School, an institution designed to accommodate young performers, and graduated as valedictorian in 1992 while already starring on national television.
Saved by the Bell
Thiessen's career changed in 1989 when she was cast as Kelly Kapowski on NBC's "Saved by the Bell."
Kelly was the popular Bayside High cheerleader and longtime love interest of Zack Morris, played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar. Thiessen starred alongside Gosselaar, Mario Lopez, Elizabeth Berkley, Lark Voorhies, Dustin Diamond, and Dennis Haskins.
The series became a defining piece of early-1990s youth television and turned Thiessen into a teen idol. She appeared in 75 episodes of the original series and later returned for "Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style," "Saved by the Bell: The College Years," and "Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Las Vegas."
While still playing Kelly, Thiessen made guest appearances on series including "Charles in Charge," "Married… with Children," "The Hogan Family," "Step by Step," and "Blossom."
She also made her feature-film debut in the 1993 Pauly Shore comedy "Son in Law."
Beverly Hills, 90210
Thiessen made one of the more successful teen-star transitions of the era when she joined "Beverly Hills, 90210" in 1994.
Rather than playing another wholesome Kelly Kapowski-type character, Thiessen was cast as Valerie Malone, a manipulative and sexually confident newcomer with a darker personal history. Valerie arrived following the departure of Shannen Doherty's Brenda Walsh and immediately disrupted the established relationships within the show's group of friends.
The role allowed Thiessen to move away from her squeaky-clean "Saved by the Bell" image and prove she could play a substantially more complicated character.
Thiessen appeared in 136 episodes of "Beverly Hills, 90210" between 1994 and 1998 and returned for the show's series finale in 2000. Her castmates included Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling, Luke Perry, and Brian Austin Green.
Thiessen later said this was the job where she first began making significant money as an actress.
During her "90210" years, she also starred in television movies including "The Stranger Beside Me," "She Fought Alone," "Sweet Dreams," and "Buried Secrets."

Career After 90210
After leaving "Beverly Hills, 90210," Thiessen worked steadily in both film and television. She appeared on "NewsRadio," "Cupid," "Two Guys and a Girl," and "Just Shoot Me!" and had roles in films including "Speedway Junky," "From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money," "Love Stinks," "The Ladies Man," and the horror parody "Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the Thirteenth."
In 2002, she appeared in Woody Allen's "Hollywood Ending." That same year, she returned to series television as Wilhelmina "Billie" Chambers on the Fox action drama "Fastlane," co-starring Peter Facinelli and Bill Bellamy. The expensive series lasted one season.
Thiessen later appeared on "Good Morning, Miami" and had a recurring role on "What About Brian."
Her next long-running television role arrived in 2009 with USA Network's "White Collar." Thiessen played Elizabeth Burke, the wife of FBI agent Peter Burke, portrayed by Tim DeKay. Matt Bomer starred as con artist Neal Caffrey.
"White Collar" ran for six seasons and gave Thiessen one of the longest roles of her career. She appeared in 76 episodes before the series concluded in 2014.
She later starred as Lori Mendoza on the Netflix family comedy "Alexa & Katie" from 2018 to 2020.
Return to Saved by the Bell
Thiessen returned to Bayside High when Peacock revived "Saved by the Bell" in 2020.
In the sequel series, Kelly Kapowski was now married to Zack Morris, who had become governor of California, making Kelly the state's first lady. Thiessen appeared alongside several original cast members while a younger ensemble took center stage.
The reboot ran for two seasons before being canceled in 2022.
The role allowed Thiessen to revisit the character that made her famous more than three decades earlier while poking fun at the exaggerated mythology surrounding the original show.

Food Career and Cookbooks
Outside acting, Thiessen developed a substantial second career centered on cooking, entertaining, and lifestyle content.
From 2015 to 2017, she hosted "Dinner at Tiffani's" on the Cooking Channel. The series featured Thiessen preparing meals and entertaining celebrity friends, including former co-stars from "White Collar" and "Beverly Hills, 90210." She also served as an executive producer.
In 2018, she published her first cookbook, "Pull Up a Chair: Recipes from My Family to Yours." The book featured 125 recipes focused on accessible home cooking and entertaining.
Thiessen later became the host of MTV's "Deliciousness," a food-themed spinoff of "Ridiculousness" built around internet videos of cooking disasters and other culinary mishaps. The series premiered in 2020 and ran for multiple seasons.
Her second cookbook, "Here We Go Again: Recipes and Inspiration to Level Up Your Leftovers," was published in 2023. The book focused on transforming leftovers and unused ingredients into new meals while reducing food waste.
Thiessen has also maintained a food and lifestyle website featuring recipes and entertaining ideas.
Coven Academy
In 2026, Thiessen returned to scripted series television with "Coven Academy."
The Freeform supernatural drama is set at an elite magical boarding school in New Orleans and centers on a group of teenage witches and warlocks. Thiessen plays Miss Graves, the glamorous and formidable head of the academy.
The cast also includes Malina Weissman, Malachi Barton, Jordan Leftwich, Ora Duplass, Louis Thresher, and Devon Sawa.
The role represented another generational shift for Thiessen. After first becoming famous playing a high school student herself, she was now playing the authority figure overseeing a new ensemble of young television stars.
Personal Life
Thiessen began dating Brian Austin Green in 1992 after the two were introduced by actor David Faustino. Green later became her co-star on "Beverly Hills, 90210." Thiessen and Green lived together before ending their relationship in 1995.
She subsequently dated actor David Strickland, who died by suicide in 1999.
Thiessen met actor Richard Ruccolo while appearing on "Two Guys and a Girl." They became engaged in 2001 but ended their engagement in 2003.
She married actor and artist Brady Smith on July 9, 2005. They have two children, daughter Harper, born in 2010, and son Holt, born in 2015.
Thiessen has also supported several charitable and environmental organizations. She has worked with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and participated in programs supporting children with cancer, environmental causes, and sustainable living.
Real Estate
Thiessen and Smith have lived for many years in the Encino area of Los Angeles.
A home associated with the couple appears in property records with an unusual ownership history. The roughly century-old residence sits on more than an acre. Records show a $2 million transaction in 2005 involving Thiessen and Smith, followed shortly afterward by another transaction that appears to have returned title to the previous owner. Because the public records are ambiguous, it is difficult to establish conclusively how the property is currently held.
The couple previously owned a home in Studio City, California, which they sold in 2014 for $2.5 million.
They also owned a vacation townhome at the La Quinta Resort & Club in La Quinta, California. That property was sold in January 2025 for $700,000.
Thiessen's family also has a cabin in California's Sequoia National Forest that was built by her grandfather in 1963. She has featured the property in lifestyle and home-improvement content.
Awards and Recognition
Thiessen received three Young Artist Award nominations for "Saved by the Bell," including nominations for her individual performance and the show's ensemble.
She earned a Teen Choice Award nomination for "Fastlane" in 2003.
Thiessen's 2005 short film "Just Pray," which she directed and produced, was selected for the Tribeca Film Festival and received nominations at several film festivals.
She also received a Daytime Emmy nomination as part of the cast of "Alexa & Katie."
More than three decades after "Saved by the Bell" first made her famous, Thiessen has remained associated with Kelly Kapowski while building a career that has extended through primetime drama, cable television, streaming, producing, hosting, cooking, and publishing.
