Biography & Early Wealth Journey

Born Thomas Miles, Nephew Tommy is best known as the longtime co-host of the nationally syndicated "The Steve Harvey Morning Show," where his elaborate prank phone calls have become one of the program's signature features. His stage name comes from the fact that he is the nephew of comedian and television host Steve Harvey.

Miles has turned his radio persona into a multi-platform entertainment career. His prank calls have spawned more than 10 albums and the long-running "Run That Prank" podcast. As a stand-up comedian, he spent three years as the exclusive opening act for Luther Vandross and has spent decades touring comedy clubs, theaters, and festivals.

In 2018, Miles expanded his audience significantly when he began hosting the OWN dating series "Ready to Love." The show developed into one of the network's most durable unscripted franchises, eventually reaching an eleventh season. His other work has included acting in films such as "Think Like a Man," "N-Secure," "The Heart Specialist," and "Boo! A Madea Halloween," hosting the Essence Festival's mainstage, producing comedy projects, and founding the Miles of Giving Foundation to assist military veterans and their families.

Early Life

Primary Income Streams & Multi-Million Contracts

Thomas Miles was born on May 18, 1967, in Houston, Texas. He developed an interest in performing while growing up in Houston and later enrolled at Texas A&M University to study theater.

Miles became the first Black Theatre Arts major at Texas A&M. His theatrical training extended beyond the university, and he later studied with members of the Royal Shakespeare Company in London.

Before becoming nationally known as a comedian and broadcaster, Miles worked extensively as an actor onstage. He appeared in more than a dozen theatrical productions and developed the character work and vocal versatility that would later become essential to his prank calls.

Although his eventual fame would be closely associated with his uncle, Steve Harvey, Miles spent years developing his own performing career through theater and stand-up before becoming a nationally syndicated radio personality.

Stand-Up Comedy

Miles transitioned from theater into stand-up comedy and gradually developed a following through club appearances and live performances.

One of his most important early opportunities came when he was selected as the exclusive opening comedian for Luther Vandross. Miles spent three years touring with the legendary R&B singer, performing for large concert audiences around the country.

The experience gave him exposure far beyond the comedy-club circuit and helped establish him as a performer capable of entertaining large audiences. He continued touring as a stand-up comic even after radio became his primary platform.

Wealth Trajectory & Future Earnings Projections

Miles later recorded the comedy special "Nephew Tommy: Just My Thoughts" at Detroit's MotorCity Casino. He has continued performing in theaters and comedy clubs throughout the United States while balancing radio and television commitments.

"The Steve Harvey Morning Show"

Miles became a key member of "The Steve Harvey Morning Show," which Harvey created in 2000 and which expanded into national syndication through Premiere Networks in 2005.

The program eventually became one of America's largest syndicated morning radio shows, airing in markets across the country and reaching millions of listeners. In addition to Harvey and Miles, longtime members of the show's team have included Shirley Strawberry, Carla Ferrell, and Kier "Junior" Spates.

Miles' role extends beyond functioning as Harvey's comedic sidekick. His characters, stories, live comedy, and prank calls developed into distinct elements of the program, giving him an individual following within the show's much larger audience.

His family relationship with Harvey provided the inspiration for the name "Nephew Tommy," but the nickname eventually became a professional brand separate from Harvey's own career.

Prank Phone Calls

The most famous recurring feature of Miles' radio career is his prank-call segment. Listeners submit the names and telephone numbers of friends or relatives along with information that Miles can use to construct an elaborate fictional situation.

Miles then calls the unsuspecting target while performing one of a wide range of characters. His scenarios have involved everything from fake landlords and pastors to employers, romantic rivals, bureaucrats, and angry strangers.

The calls often escalate into arguments before Miles eventually reveals that the conversation is a prank from "The Steve Harvey Morning Show."

The segment became popular enough to develop into a business of its own. Miles released multiple volumes of "Nephew Tommy's Prank Phone Calls," along with collections including "Celebrity Prank Phone Calls" and "Lost Prank Phone Calls."

The concept later expanded into "Run That Prank," an iHeartRadio podcast featuring selections from his enormous archive of calls as well as newer material. Thousands of prank segments have been distributed through radio, streaming, podcasts, and social media.

Essence Festival

Miles' experience as both a comedian and emcee led to a long relationship with the Essence Festival in New Orleans.

He served as the festival's mainstage host for seven years, introducing performers and entertaining enormous crowds between musical sets. The annual event has regularly drawn hundreds of thousands of attendees to New Orleans.

During Miles' years with the festival, featured performers included Beyoncé, Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, Usher, and Kanye West.

The job showcased a different part of Miles' skill set. Rather than performing a conventional stand-up set, he was responsible for controlling the energy of an enormous live audience and moving the event smoothly between some of the biggest performers in music.

Acting Career

Although radio and stand-up made him famous, Miles began his career as a trained actor and has continued taking screen roles.

His early television appearances included episodes of "Sister, Sister" and "The Parkers." His film work has included "Thug Life," "N-Secure," and "The Heart Specialist," which starred Zoë Saldana.

In 2012, Miles appeared in "Think Like a Man," the ensemble romantic comedy adapted from Steve Harvey's book "Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man." The film starred Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Gabrielle Union, Taraji P. Henson, Regina Hall, and several other prominent performers.

Miles also appeared in 2013's "Baggage Claim" and in Tyler Perry's 2016 comedy "Boo! A Madea Halloween."

In 2018, he played Robert Kennedy on the drama series "5th Ward," further demonstrating the dramatic training behind his much better-known comedic persona.

"Ready to Love"

Miles added another major chapter to his career in 2018 when he became the host of the OWN reality dating series "Ready to Love."

Produced by Will Packer Media and Lighthearted Entertainment, the series follows successful Black men and women searching for serious relationships. Unlike dating shows built primarily around contestants in their early 20s, "Ready to Love" has generally focused on established adults in their 30s and 40s.

Miles serves as more than a conventional presenter. He meets with the participants, questions their decisions, offers relationship advice, announces eliminations, and frequently challenges contestants when he believes they are approaching the process dishonestly.

His credibility as a married man with a decades-long relationship became part of his hosting persona. Rather than simply narrating the competition, Miles positioned himself as a mentor attempting to push participants toward genuine relationships.

The program became one of OWN's longest-running dating franchises, moving among cities including Atlanta, Houston, Miami, Dallas, Fort Worth, Philadelphia, and Detroit and eventually reaching an eleventh season.

Miles of Giving Foundation

Miles has maintained a particularly strong connection to members of the United States military.

In 2011 and 2013, he participated in USO holiday tours organized in association with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He traveled to more than a dozen military installations in the Middle East, performing for American service members stationed overseas.

Those experiences inspired him to establish the Miles of Giving Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on providing assistance to veterans and their families. The organization has provided financial help and other support to enlisted veterans facing difficulties after military service.

Military charities became a recurring part of Miles' philanthropic work rather than a one-time celebrity initiative, and he continued using comedy events and fundraising programs to support the foundation.

Thyroid Cancer

In 2022, Miles publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer after doctors investigated a lump on his neck.

He received the diagnosis in May while working in Miami on "Ready to Love." Miles underwent surgery on August 24, 2022, to remove the cancer.

Following the procedure, Miles announced that the cancer had been completely removed and that he did not require chemotherapy. His voice was temporarily affected by the surgery, a particularly significant concern for someone whose career depends heavily on radio, stand-up comedy, and hosting.

Miles subsequently returned to broadcasting, touring, and television. He has continued discussing the experience publicly and encouraging his audience to receive regular health screenings.

Business Ventures

Miles has expanded his personal brand beyond entertainment into consumer products.

Through Southern Flavors LLC, he developed food products inspired by Southern cooking. An early project, "Just Good Gritz," was conceived as a line of gourmet flavored grits.

He later developed the "That's My Mama's" brand, which sells Southern-inspired seasonings. Products have included blends such as Houston Heat and Spicy Jubilee.

Miles promoted "That's My Mama's" within the specialty-food industry, including an appearance at the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York. The business gave him another revenue stream independent of radio, television, and live comedy.

Personal Life

Miles met his wife, Jacqueline, while they were students at Texas A&M University in 1986. The two knew each other for years before ultimately marrying and building a family together.

Thomas and Jacqueline have three children. Their marriage has also shaped his role on "Ready to Love," where Miles frequently draws on the lessons of his own long-term relationship when talking to contestants about commitment, communication, and marriage.

Miles is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and has remained strongly connected to his Houston roots despite spending decades working nationally.

His career ultimately developed along an unusual path. He began as a formally trained theater actor, became a touring comedian, turned prank phone calls into a nationally recognized radio franchise, and then reinvented himself again as the host of a successful television dating series while continuing to perform stand-up and develop businesses outside entertainment.
