Biography & Early Wealth Journey

Shawn Stockman is best known as a member of Boyz II Men, one of the most commercially successful R&B vocal groups in history. Alongside Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris, and original bass singer Michael McCary, Stockman helped create hits including "Motownphilly," "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday," "End of the Road," "I'll Make Love to You," "On Bended Knee," "Water Runs Dry," and "One Sweet Day."

Boyz II Men has sold more than 60 million albums worldwide, including the 9× Platinum "Cooleyhighharmony" and 12× Platinum "II." The group won four Grammy Awards and spent 50 cumulative weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 during the 1990s. Their collaboration with Mariah Carey, "One Sweet Day," spent 16 weeks at #1 and held the chart record for more than two decades. Stockman shares songwriting credit on the song, giving him a continuing publishing interest in one of the biggest singles of the era.

Stockman has also accumulated valuable songwriting and production credits outside the group's biggest externally written hits. He wrote and produced Boyz II Men's "Doin' Just Fine," wrote and performed "Visions of a Sunset" for the film "Mr. Holland's Opus," and has released solo material of his own. Outside music, he spent five seasons as a judge on NBC's "The Sing-Off."

Early Life and Education

Primary Income Streams & Multi-Million Contracts

Shawn Patrick Stockman was born on September 26, 1972, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Thurman and JoAnn Stockman.

He showed musical ability from an early age and began singing with the Philadelphia Boys Choir & Chorale when he was eight.

As a teenager, Stockman attended the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts. In 1988, after he performed with the school choir, he was recruited into Unique Attraction, the vocal group that would become Boyz II Men.

Nathan Morris had originally formed Unique Attraction with several classmates. As the lineup changed, Wanya Morris joined, followed by Stockman and Michael McCary.

Inspired by New Edition, the group renamed itself Boyz II Men after the New Edition song "Boys to Men."

The group's breakthrough came after a 1989 New Edition concert in Philadelphia. They managed to get backstage and performed a cappella for Michael Bivins, who was impressed enough to begin helping develop the group and eventually assist them in securing a Motown deal.

"Cooleyhighharmony"

Boyz II Men released their debut album, "Cooleyhighharmony," in 1991. The album reached #3 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the R&B albums chart.

"Motownphilly" became the group's breakthrough single, while "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday" showcased the tight vocal harmonies that became their trademark. "Cooleyhighharmony" eventually earned 9× Platinum certification in the United States.

In 1992, Boyz II Men recorded "End of the Road" for the soundtrack to the film "Boomerang." The song spent 13 consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, establishing a chart record at the time.

"End of the Road" won Grammy Awards for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best R&B Song.

"II"

After releasing "Christmas Interpretations" in 1993, Boyz II Men returned with "II" in 1994.

The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and became the group's biggest-selling studio album, ultimately earning 12× Platinum certification in the United States.

"I'll Make Love to You," written by Babyface, spent 14 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. When its run ended, Boyz II Men replaced themselves in the top spot with "On Bended Knee." "Water Runs Dry" reached #2.

"II" won the inaugural Grammy Award for Best R&B Album, while "I'll Make Love to You" won Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

"One Sweet Day"

In 1995, Boyz II Men collaborated with Mariah Carey on "One Sweet Day."

Carey, Stockman, Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris, Michael McCary, and Walter Afanasieff received songwriting credit on the track.

"One Sweet Day" debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained there for 16 consecutive weeks. It became the longest-running #1 single in the history of the chart and held that record for 23 years.

Stockman's participation was financially meaningful beyond his role as a performer. He holds a songwriting interest in the composition, and publishing records associated with the song include Shawn Patrick Publishing. Those rights have continued generating income through radio, streaming, sales, public performance, cover versions, and licensing. His precise ownership percentage and cumulative royalties have not been publicly disclosed.

"Doin' Just Fine" and Songwriting

Stockman developed into one of Boyz II Men's more active songwriters and producers.

One of his most important individual credits is "Doin' Just Fine," from the group's 1997 album "Evolution." Stockman wrote the song himself and served as its producer and mixing engineer. The track later became a Boyz II Men staple and has appeared on the group's greatest-hits releases.

His writing and production work gave Stockman royalty streams beyond his share of Boyz II Men's performance income. In addition to "Doin' Just Fine" and "One Sweet Day," he accumulated writing and production credits throughout the group's catalog.

In 1995, Stockman wrote and performed the solo song "Visions of a Sunset" for the film "Mr. Holland's Opus." The song appeared as the opening track on the movie's soundtrack.

Stockman also wrote music for the film "Seventeen Again" and has contributed as a producer, arranger, and songwriter to other recording projects.

"Evolution" and Later Boyz II Men Albums

Boyz II Men released "Evolution" in 1997. The album debuted at #1 on both the Billboard 200 and the R&B albums chart and included "4 Seasons of Loneliness," "A Song for Mama," and "Doin' Just Fine."

The group left Motown and released "Nathan Michael Shawn Wanya" through Universal in 2000. Boyz II Men then signed with Arista and released "Full Circle" in 2002, the final studio album to feature Michael McCary.

After McCary departed because of health problems, Stockman, Nathan Morris, and Wanya Morris continued Boyz II Men as a trio.

Later albums included "Throwback, Vol. 1," "The Remedy," "Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA," "Love," "Covered: Winter," "Twenty," "Collide," and "Under the Streetlight."

Las Vegas Residency and Touring

Boyz II Men's live career became an important second act for Stockman, Nathan Morris, and Wanya Morris after the group's peak years on the charts.

In 2013, the trio launched a residency at the Mirage in Las Vegas. What began as a limited engagement evolved into a long-running relationship with the Strip, giving the group a steady performance business without the constant travel of a traditional tour.

After the Mirage residency ended, Boyz II Men continued returning to Las Vegas for exclusive engagements. The trio booked recurring performances at The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan in 2024, 2025, and 2026. Their official site announced another spring residency for 2027 after repeated returns to the venue.

The group has also maintained a substantial touring schedule. In 2026, Stockman, Nathan, and Wanya joined New Edition and Toni Braxton for the 30-city "New Edition Way Tour," playing major arenas across the United States.

Because Boyz II Men has operated as a trio for most of the past two decades, the principal performance income generated by the group's touring and residency business has been divided among three active members rather than the original four.

Solo Career

Stockman has periodically pursued solo music while remaining an active member of Boyz II Men.

In 2018, he released the five-song EP "Shawn." The project later became the foundation for his first full-length solo album.

In 2020, Stockman released "Foreword" through SRG ILS/UMG. The 11-track album included material from the earlier EP as well as new songs and featured collaborations with producers and writers including Raphael Saadiq, Tim Kelley, Antonio Dixon, and Erik "Blu2th" Griggs.

Stockman said he wrote or co-wrote every song on "Foreword," giving the project a more personal identity than his group recordings.

He has also contributed vocals to other artists' projects. In 2017, Stockman appeared on the title track of Foo Fighters' album "Concrete and Gold."

"The Sing-Off"

Stockman expanded his television career in 2009 when he became one of the original judges on NBC's a cappella competition series "The Sing-Off."

He initially served alongside Ben Folds and Nicole Scherzinger, with Nick Lachey hosting.

Stockman remained with the program across five seasons as the judging panel evolved. Later judges included Sara Bareilles and Jewel. His experience as a member of one of the world's most successful harmony groups made him a natural fit for a competition centered on vocal arranging and a cappella performance.

The series gave Stockman an independent television profile outside Boyz II Men and added another income stream to his music career.

"The Masked Singer"

In 2024, Stockman, Nathan Morris, and Wanya Morris competed together on season 12 of Fox's "The Masked Singer."

Performing as the Buffalos, Boyz II Men advanced through the competition without revealing their identities and ultimately won the season.

The victory introduced the group to another generation of television viewers more than three decades after "Cooleyhighharmony."

Micah's Voice

Stockman and his wife, Sharhonda, founded the nonprofit organization Micah's Voice after one of their twin sons, Micah, was diagnosed with autism.

The organization provides support, education, financial assistance, and resources to families raising children on the autism spectrum. Stockman and Sharhonda have spoken publicly about the high costs associated with therapies and services and their desire to help families who cannot afford the same resources they were able to provide for their son.

Micah's Voice has partnered with companies and other organizations on fundraising and autism-awareness initiatives. In 2019, the organization worked with the Oakland Athletics to create a sensory room at the Oakland Coliseum for fans with autism and other sensory needs.

Awards and Honors

Boyz II Men has won four Grammy Awards, including three awards for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and the inaugural Grammy for Best R&B Album for "II."

The group has also won nine American Music Awards, multiple Soul Train Music Awards, and several Billboard Music Awards. Boyz II Men received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012.

Their commercial achievements include multiple Diamond-certified albums and some of the longest-running #1 singles in Billboard Hot 100 history.

In 2024, Stockman, Nathan Morris, and Wanya Morris added another television honor when Boyz II Men won season 12 of "The Masked Singer."

Personal Life

Stockman married Sharhonda Jones in 2001.

They have three children: twin sons Micah and Ty and a daughter named Brooklyn. Micah was diagnosed with autism when he was young, an experience that inspired Shawn and Sharhonda to create Micah's Voice.

Stockman has spoken publicly about how his son's diagnosis affected their family and about the financial challenges faced by parents trying to obtain appropriate therapy and educational support for children on the autism spectrum.
