Biography & Early Wealth Journey
Carti broke into the mainstream with his 2017 self-titled mixtape, which included "Magnolia" and "Wokeuplikethis*," featuring Lil Uzi Vert. His 2018 debut studio album, "Die Lit," reached #3 on the Billboard 200, and 2020's "Whole Lotta Red" became his first #1 album. After more than four years without another studio album, Carti returned in March 2025 with "MUSIC," a 30-track project that debuted at #1 with 298,000 equivalent album units and generated 384 million on-demand streams in its first week.
Carti has also built a lucrative touring career, accumulated billions of streams, appeared on major hits by artists including Travis Scott, The Weeknd, and Future, and developed Opium into an influential record label and creative collective.
Early Life
Playboi Carti was born Jordan Terrell Carter on September 13, 1996, in Atlanta, Georgia. He grew up in the Atlanta suburb of Riverdale and attended North Springs Charter High School in Sandy Springs.
Primary Income Streams & Multi-Million Contracts
As a teenager, Carti initially dreamed of becoming a professional basketball player. He played high school basketball but eventually quit after disagreements with his coach and increasingly turned his attention toward music. He frequently skipped classes to record and also worked at H&M before committing to rap full-time.
Carti began releasing music as a teenager under the name Sir Cartier before adopting Playboi Carti. Much of his earliest material was later removed from the internet.
Underground Career and A$AP Rocky
Carti initially became affiliated with Atlanta's Awful Records and producer Ethereal, developing a following through SoundCloud and Atlanta's underground scene. Early tracks such as "Broke Boi" and "Fetti" became cult favorites.

After relocating to New York, Carti developed relationships with members of the A$AP Mob. A$AP Rocky became an important mentor and eventually brought Carti into his AWGE creative organization.
Carti also collaborated with emerging artists including Lil Uzi Vert and Lil Yachty and toured with A$AP Ferg. By late 2016, he had signed a major-label deal through AWGE and Interscope Records. Forbes described the recording contract as a six-figure agreement and also reported that Carti earned a six-figure payday from an Adidas advertising campaign during his early breakout period.

"Playboi Carti" and "Magnolia"
Carti released his self-titled commercial mixtape in April 2017. The project reached #12 on the Billboard 200 and transformed him from an underground favorite into a mainstream rap star.
Its breakout single, "Magnolia," produced by Pi'erre Bourne, reached #29 on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually earned multi-platinum certification. The mixtape also featured "Wokeuplikethis*" with Lil Uzi Vert, beginning one of the most popular recurring partnerships in modern rap.
Carti supported the project by touring extensively, including dates with Gucci Mane. His unconventional delivery—built around repeated phrases, ad-libs, unconventional pronunciation, and the so-called "baby voice" he increasingly developed—separated him from more lyrically conventional rappers.
"Die Lit"
Carti released his debut studio album, "Die Lit," in May 2018. The project debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 and developed a particularly strong long-term streaming audience.
Guests included Lil Uzi Vert, Travis Scott, Young Thug, Skepta, Bryson Tiller, Chief Keef, and Nicki Minaj. Songs such as "Shoota," "R.I.P.," "Love Hurts," "Poke It Out," and "Long Time" became staples of Carti's catalog.
"Die Lit" helped establish the minimalist production, unconventional vocal delivery, and punk-influenced live energy that would increasingly define his career. Spotify has reported that the album has generated billions of streams worldwide.
"Whole Lotta Red"
Carti spent more than two years developing his next album while unfinished songs and demos repeatedly leaked online. The intense fan interest surrounding those leaks helped turn "Whole Lotta Red" into one of the most anticipated rap albums of the period.
The album finally arrived on Christmas Day 2020. Executive produced by Kanye West, "Whole Lotta Red" featured appearances from West, Future, and Kid Cudi and debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200.
Its reception was initially polarized. Carti moved even further away from conventional trap, embracing distorted synthesizers, clipped vocals, aggressive repetition, and a gothic punk aesthetic. Over time, however, the record's reputation grew dramatically.
"Whole Lotta Red" became particularly influential on the emerging rage-rap movement. Artists in the underground increasingly adopted its distorted production and high-energy performance style, while songs including "Sky," "Stop Breathing," "Rockstar Made," and "ILoveUIHateU" became enduring streaming and concert favorites.
The album also provided the foundation for Carti's 2021 King Vamp Tour, whose highly energetic performances further strengthened his reputation as a major live attraction.
Collaborations and the Road to "MUSIC"
Although Carti did not release another full studio album for more than four years, he remained highly visible through collaborations.
He appeared on Kanye West's "Off the Grid" and Trippie Redd's "Miss the Rage." In 2023, he joined Travis Scott on "FE!N," which became one of the biggest songs from Scott's album "Utopia" and ultimately accumulated well over one billion streams.
Carti also joined The Weeknd and Madonna on "Popular." In 2024, he appeared with Future and Travis Scott on "Type Shit," from Future and Metro Boomin's album "We Don't Trust You," and on "Carnival" with Kanye West, Ty Dolla $ign, and Rich the Kid.
Later in 2024, Carti and The Weeknd released "Timeless," another enormous streaming hit. He also issued the solo single "All Red," his first official solo release in several years.
During this period, Carti repeatedly teased his next album under variations of the names "Music" and "I Am Music," creating a lengthy and deliberately mysterious rollout.
"MUSIC"
On March 14, 2025, Carti finally released his third studio album, "MUSIC," through AWGE and Interscope.
The original streaming edition contained 30 tracks and ran for more than 75 minutes. Guests included Travis Scott, Future, The Weeknd, Lil Uzi Vert, Young Thug, Skepta, Ty Dolla $ign, Jhené Aiko, and Kendrick Lamar.
"MUSIC" became the biggest commercial opening of Carti's career. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 with 298,000 equivalent album units, including 384 million official on-demand streams. It was the largest opening week for a rap album in 2025 and the largest streaming week for a rap album since 2023.
All 30 tracks debuted on the Billboard Hot 100, making Carti the first rapper to place every track from an album containing at least 30 songs on the chart. "Evil J0rdan" debuted at #2, while "Rather Lie," featuring The Weeknd, reached #4.
Spotify also reported that "MUSIC" became its most-streamed album in a single day in 2025 at the time of release.
A deluxe version, "MUSIC – SORRY 4 DA WAIT," followed with additional songs.
Touring
Carti's concert business grew alongside his streaming audience. His shows are known for heavy bass, distorted guitar introductions, mosh pits, elaborate lighting, and a presentation influenced as much by punk and metal concerts as traditional rap performances.
The Antagonist Tour eventually launched in 2025 after earlier versions had been postponed. Touring data from 15 reported performances showed approximately $16.5 million in gross ticket revenue from more than 147,000 tickets sold.
Carti also became a stadium support act for The Weeknd's massive "After Hours Til Dawn" tour, performing across North America and Europe during 2025 and 2026.
Opium
Carti founded his Opium imprint around 2019-2020, initially signing producers before expanding the roster to recording artists.
The label's core acts include Ken Carson, Destroy Lonely, and the duo Homixide Gang. Each developed substantial audiences while embracing a dark visual identity and experimental production style closely associated with Carti.
Ken Carson's "A Great Chaos" and Destroy Lonely's albums helped establish Opium as one of the most influential labels in underground rap. Rather than simply lending his name to the company, Carti has functioned as a curator of its sound, visual aesthetic, fashion, and live presentation.
By 2026, the Opium roster was appearing collectively at major festivals and events, further expanding Carti's career from performer into label executive and creative director.
Relationship With Iggy Azalea
In 2018, Carti began dating Australian rapper Iggy Azalea. The couple lived together in Atlanta for a period and welcomed a son, Onyx, in 2020.
Their relationship subsequently ended and became publicly contentious, with Azalea criticizing Carti on social media over his involvement as a parent.
Legal Issues
Carti has faced several arrests and criminal allegations during his career.
In July 2017, he was arrested following an altercation with his then-girlfriend at Los Angeles International Airport. He was booked on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic battery and released on bail. The Los Angeles City Attorney subsequently declined to file criminal charges.
In February 2018, Carti was involved in an altercation with a tour-bus driver at a service station in Scotland. He was later convicted of assault and fined £800.
In April 2020, police in Georgia stopped Carti's Lamborghini and reported finding marijuana, prescription drugs, and firearms in the vehicle. He was arrested on drug- and traffic-related charges and released on bond the following day.
Carti was arrested again in Georgia in December 2022 following allegations that he assaulted a girlfriend who was pregnant at the time and attempted to prevent her from calling emergency services. He was booked on charges including felony aggravated assault. Carti's attorney, Brian Steel, denied the allegations and said prosecutors had indicated that the case would be dismissed without prosecution. Later reporting indicated that the case was ultimately dismissed.
In October 2025, Carti faced another case after an incident involving a limousine driver in Utah. According to a police report, the driver alleged that Carti punched him during an argument while the rapper was traveling to a tour rehearsal. Deputies reported observing redness on the driver's jaw, and the police report said Carti acknowledged striking him, although others at the scene gave conflicting accounts. Carti was charged with misdemeanor assault. No final public resolution of that case had been reported by mid-2026.
