Despite that résumé, Parker has also experienced severe financial instability. During the 2010s, she publicly revealed that she, her husband, and their son had gone through a period of homelessness and lived in an extended-stay hotel while she struggled to secure work. She discussed those difficulties on the reality series "Hollywood Divas." Her career later recovered substantially. Parker became a regular on "A House Divided," returned to the role of Trudy Proud in "The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder," and accumulated credits on shows including "Ray Donovan," "Recovery Road," "Queen Sugar," "9-1-1," "Them," and "Insecure."

Film Career
Wealth Trajectory & Future Earnings Projections
Parker became a frequent presence in Black film and independent cinema during the late 1990s and 2000s.
She starred opposite Rusty Cundieff in the romantic comedy "Sprung" and appeared in "Why Do Fools Fall in Love," the biographical drama about singer Frankie Lymon. She also appeared in "Woo," "30 Years to Life," and the thriller "High Crimes."
In 2002, Parker appeared in the Colin Farrell thriller "Phone Booth." Her subsequent films included Spike Lee's "She Hate Me" and the Ray Charles biopic "Ray."
One of Parker's best-known dramatic roles came in 2005's "Hustle & Flow," in which she played Lexus, the former girlfriend of Terrence Howard's character, DJay. The acclaimed independent film won an Academy Award for its song "It's Hard out Here for a Pimp" and earned an Oscar nomination for Howard.
Parker again appeared opposite Howard in the 2006 musical film "Idlewild," starring Outkast members André 3000 and Big Boi.
"The Proud Family"
In 2001, Parker began voicing veterinarian and family matriarch Trudy Proud on Disney Channel's "The Proud Family."
Trudy is the mother of Penny Proud, voiced by Kyla Pratt, and the wife of Oscar Proud, voiced by Tommy Davidson. Parker remained with the original series through 2005 and reprised the role in "The Proud Family Movie."

Financial Struggles and "Hollywood Divas"
Parker's lengthy résumé did not protect her from serious financial difficulties. She later explained that much of her film work had been in independent productions rather than projects that generated enormous salaries.
During a prolonged career slowdown, Parker and her family lost stable housing and spent time living in an extended-stay hotel. She has said she felt she had been blackballed in Hollywood at various points in her career.
Those struggles became part of her storyline when she joined TV One's "Hollywood Divas" in 2014. The reality series followed Parker, Golden Brooks, Countess Vaughn, Elise Neal, and Lisa Wu as they attempted to navigate careers in an industry that could be particularly unforgiving to actresses as they aged.
Career Recovery
Parker's acting career regained momentum. She appeared on "True Blood," "Ray Donovan," "Recovery Road," "Queen Sugar," "Family Time," "How to Get Away with Murder," "9-1-1," "Insecure," and "Them."
She also took a leading role in the streaming family drama "A House Divided," earning an Indie Series Award nomination for her performance.
Parker has pursued music as well. In 2016, she released the EP "Paula Jai & Friends."
