Early Life
Paula Garcés was born on March 20, 1974, in Medellín, Colombia. Her father worked as a fisherman and her mother was a schoolteacher. When she was a young girl, her family immigrated to the United States and settled in East Harlem, New York City. Growing up bilingual and bicultural, Garcés was exposed to both Latin American and American pop culture, which influenced her artistic sensibility. She began her career as a teenager, appearing in commercials and early television roles that introduced her to the entertainment business.
Acting Career
Garcés made her feature film debut in "Hangin' with the Homeboys" (1991), followed by roles in "Dangerous Minds" (1995) and "Clockstoppers" (2002). Her breakout role came in the 2004 comedy "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle," where she played Maria, the love interest of John Cho's character. She reprised the role in the sequels, which also starred Kal Penn, "Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay" and "A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas."

On television, Garcés gained widespread attention for her portrayal of Officer Tina Hanlon on the critically acclaimed FX drama "The Shield." She also appeared in popular series such as "Oz," "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," and "Warehouse 13." In later years, she became known to younger audiences for her role as Geny Martinez, the mother of Ruby, on Netflix's coming-of-age hit "On My Block."
In addition to acting, Garcés co-founded Further Lane Productions, her own production company, and co-created the comic book series "Aluna," which was later developed into a video game. "Aluna" introduced a Latina superhero rooted in Incan mythology, reflecting Garcés's passion for storytelling that highlights Latin heritage.
