Biography & Early Wealth Journey
Patsy Kensit has worked professionally since childhood, building a career that has spanned film, television, pop music, reality television, and British soap operas. As a child actress, she appeared alongside Robert Redford, Mia Farrow, and Elizabeth Taylor. As a teenager, she became the lead singer of Eighth Wonder, scoring a major European hit with "I'm Not Scared." Her film career included "Absolute Beginners," "Twenty-One," and the blockbuster "Lethal Weapon 2," while later generations of British television viewers came to know her as Sadie King on "Emmerdale," Faye Morton on "Holby City," and Emma Harding on "EastEnders."
Kensit returned to "Emmerdale" as Sadie King in September 2026, exactly 20 years after leaving the soap. Her later work has also included "Death in Paradise," "A Gangster's Kiss," "Borley Rectory: The Awakening," "A Scottish Christmas Secret," and the BBC series "Pilgrimage: The Road to Holy Island." She published her autobiography, "Absolute Beginner," in 2013.
Early Life
Patricia Jude Francis Kensit was born on March 4, 1968, in Lambeth, London. Her parents were Margaret Rose Doohan Kensit and James Kensit, and she grew up with an older brother named Jamie.
Primary Income Streams & Multi-Million Contracts
Her mother was a former model who worked as a secretary for Christian Dior. Margaret was diagnosed with breast cancer while Patsy was still a young child and lived with the disease for many years before dying when Kensit was in her early 20s.
Her father, known as "Jimmy the Dip," had deep connections to London's organized-crime world. Kensit has said that he associated with both the Kray twins and their rivals, the Richardson Gang, and spent periods of her childhood in prison. He used antiques dealing as a cover and was also a compulsive gambler. He has frequently been linked in biographies to figures surrounding the 1963 Great Train Robbery, although Kensit's own accounts have generally described his criminal activities more broadly.
One frequently repeated detail about Kensit's childhood is also incorrect: Reggie Kray was not Patsy's godfather. Kensit has clarified that Reggie was her brother Jamie's godfather and that she herself never met the Krays.
Despite her father's periods of prosperity, the family experienced serious financial hardship. Kensit has recalled living with her parents and brother in two rooms on a Hounslow council estate with an outside toilet.

Her early film career placed her alongside some of the biggest stars in the world. She appeared as one of the Buchanan children in the 1974 adaptation of "The Great Gatsby," starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, and subsequently worked with Elizabeth Taylor in the 1976 fantasy film "The Blue Bird."
Wealth Trajectory & Future Earnings Projections
During the 1970s, she accumulated roles in films including "Alfie Darling," "Hennessy," "Lady Oscar," and "Hanover Street." Her performance in "Hanover Street," starring Harrison Ford, earned her a Young Artist Award nomination.
Kensit also worked steadily on British television, appearing in productions including "The Foundation," "Armchair Thriller," "Prince Regent," "Great Expectations," "Frost in May," and "Diana."
Eighth Wonder
Kensit began pursuing music as a teenager. In 1983, at age 14, she joined a band formed by her brother Jamie that was initially called Spice. The group subsequently changed its name to Eighth Wonder, with Patsy serving as lead singer.
Eighth Wonder initially found greater success in continental Europe and Japan than in the United Kingdom. Their fortunes changed dramatically in 1988 with "I'm Not Scared," written and produced by the Pet Shop Boys. The song reached #7 on the UK Singles Chart and became a hit throughout Europe.
The follow-up, "Cross My Heart," reached #13 in the UK. Eighth Wonder's album "Fearless" reached #47 on the UK Albums Chart.
The group dissolved by the end of the decade as Kensit's acting career increasingly took priority.
"Absolute Beginners" and Hollywood
While performing with Eighth Wonder, Kensit landed one of her most visible early film roles as Crepe Suzette in the 1986 musical "Absolute Beginners." The film starred Eddie O'Connell and featured David Bowie, whose music also appeared prominently on the soundtrack.
Kensit subsequently appeared in "A Chorus of Disapproval" before making a major move into Hollywood.
In 1989, she starred as Rika van den Haas in "Lethal Weapon 2" opposite Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. The action sequel was a major worldwide success, grossing more than $225 million.
Kensit continued acting internationally during the 1990s in films including "Kill Cruise," "Timebomb," "Blame It on the Bellboy," "The Turn of the Screw," "Bitter Harvest," "Angels & Insects," "Grace of My Heart," and "Speedway Junky."
Her performance as Katie in the 1991 independent drama "Twenty-One" earned her an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Female Lead.
She also portrayed Mia Farrow in the 1995 television movie "Love and Betrayal: The Mia Farrow Story."
"Emmerdale" and "Holby City"
After years of primarily film and television-movie work, Kensit enjoyed a major career resurgence through British soaps.
In 2004, she joined ITV's "Emmerdale" as glamorous and ruthless Sadie King. The character quickly became one of the soap's most prominent villains, becoming involved in affairs, blackmail, family conflicts, kidnappings, and an elaborate revenge plot.
Kensit remained with "Emmerdale" until 2006. The role earned her National Television and British Soap Award nominations.
The following year, she joined the BBC medical drama "Holby City" as ward sister Faye Morton. Kensit appeared regularly from 2007 through 2010 and returned for a guest appearance in 2019.
Reality Television and Other Projects
Kensit competed on "Strictly Come Dancing" in 2010, where she was partnered with professional dancer Robin Windsor and finished seventh.
In 2013, she published "Absolute Beginner: The Autobiography." The memoir covered her childhood, her father's criminal world, her mother's illness, her career as a child actor, Eighth Wonder, Hollywood, motherhood, and her highly publicized relationships.

"EastEnders" and Later Career
Kensit joined another major British soap in 2023 when she began playing Emma Harding on "EastEnders." Emma was introduced as the estranged biological mother of Lola Pearce-Brown, played by Danielle Harold, during Lola's terminal brain-tumor storyline.
Kensit appeared in several story arcs during 2023. That December, she guest-starred in the Christmas special of "Death in Paradise."
She returned to film in "A Gangster's Kiss" in 2024. In 2025, she starred as Constance Bull in the supernatural horror film "Borley Rectory: The Awakening" and played Sophie Bennett in the holiday romance "A Scottish Christmas Secret."
In 2026, Kensit participated in the three-part BBC series "Pilgrimage: The Road to Holy Island." She joined six other celebrities on a roughly 250-mile journey through northeast England toward Lindisfarne, discussing religion and spirituality along the way. Kensit has described herself as an "à la carte Catholic."
Return to "Emmerdale"
In May 2026, ITV announced that Kensit would return to "Emmerdale" as Sadie King, two decades after the character disappeared from the village.
Her return aired in September 2026, with Sadie once again making a dramatic entrance by helicopter. She returned ostensibly to pay her respects following the death of her former husband Jimmy King, but her arrival immediately raised questions about her true motives.
Kensit signed on for a six-month stint. She said returning to the soap after 20 years initially caused her considerable anxiety because of the volume of dialogue involved, but the familiarity of working on a long-running drama quickly returned.
