Biography & Early Wealth Journey
The timing coincided with Michaele's entry into reality television. She was already being filmed for what became Bravo's "The Real Housewives of D.C.," which premiered in 2010. The White House incident became a central part of the show's only season and ensured that Michaele was its most recognizable cast member.
Her personal life generated another wave of headlines in 2011 when her marriage to Tareq ended and she began a relationship with Journey guitarist Neal Schon. Michaele and Schon had originally met many years earlier and reconnected romantically after her separation. They married in 2013 at San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts in an elaborate ceremony broadcast live as a pay-per-view television event.
Early Life
Michaele Ann Holt was born on October 1, 1965, and grew up in the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. Her parents were Howard Holt Jr. and Rosemary O'Malley, and she grew up with three siblings.
Primary Income Streams & Multi-Million Contracts
After high school, Michaele attended King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, although she did not graduate. Contemporary reporting from the school showed that she attended during the 1989-1990 academic year.
Michaele was interested in modeling and entertainment from a young age. By the 1990s, she was working at the cosmetics department of Nordstrom at Tysons Corner in Northern Virginia, where former co-workers remembered her as outgoing, ambitious, and highly social.
Marriage to Tareq Salahi
Michaele met Tareq Salahi around 2000 on the Northern Virginia social circuit. Tareq came from the family behind Oasis Winery in Fauquier County, Virginia, and the pair became regulars at charity events, polo matches, galas, and other high-profile gatherings around the Washington area.

They married on October 5, 2002, at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington, D.C. The wedding was an enormous production attended by more than 1,800 people. The ceremony and reception reportedly involved 28 bridesmaids, 28 groomsmen, dozens of bartenders and chefs, a large big band, and tens of thousands of square feet of tenting. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy was among the prominent figures associated with the event.
Michaele and Tareq subsequently presented themselves publicly as wealthy Virginia socialites connected to the wine, polo, charity, and Washington social scenes. Their highly visible lifestyle eventually helped attract the attention of reality television producers.
White House State Dinner
Michaele became internationally famous on November 24, 2009, when she and Tareq arrived at the White House for the Obama administration's first state dinner, held in honor of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The Salahis were not on the official guest list. Nevertheless, they passed through White House security checkpoints, entered the reception, went through the presidential receiving line, and met President Barack Obama. Photographs also showed them interacting with Vice President Joe Biden, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, and other prominent guests.
The couple had spent part of the day being filmed by a production crew connected to Bravo's planned Washington installment of "The Real Housewives." After the dinner, the Salahis posted photographs of themselves at the White House on Facebook, drawing attention to the fact that their names had not appeared on the official guest list.
The episode quickly became a major security scandal. The U.S. Secret Service acknowledged that established procedures had not been followed at the initial checkpoint and publicly apologized for allowing the couple to enter without verifying that they were invited.
A congressional investigation followed. Michaele and Tareq were subpoenaed to appear before the House Homeland Security Committee and invoked their Fifth Amendment rights rather than answer questions about how they gained entry. A federal grand jury also investigated circumstances surrounding the incident, but no criminal charges were ultimately filed against the couple.
The White House incident became the defining event of Michaele's public career and generated worldwide media coverage.

"The Real Housewives of D.C."
In August 2010, Michaele became one of the five original cast members of Bravo's "The Real Housewives of D.C." alongside Mary Schmidt Amons, Lynda Erkiletian, Catherine Ommanney, and Stacie Scott Turner.
The series followed the women's social lives around Washington and Northern Virginia, but Michaele's storyline was dominated by the White House controversy. Cameras had been following the Salahis during the period leading up to the state dinner, giving the show an unusual connection to an ongoing national news story.
"The Real Housewives of D.C." ultimately aired for just one season. The original season consisted of 11 episodes followed by a two-part reunion, making it the first installment of Bravo's "Real Housewives" franchise to be canceled after a single season.
Although the show was short-lived, Michaele's involvement permanently associated her with the franchise and turned her into one of the more notorious personalities from its early years.
Relationship With Neal Schon
Michaele's marriage to Tareq unraveled publicly in 2011. In September of that year, Tareq contacted authorities and reported Michaele missing, expressing concern that she may have been abducted. Authorities soon determined that she was safe and had left voluntarily to be with Journey guitarist Neal Schon.
The revelation immediately became national entertainment news.
Michaele and Schon had actually known each other for many years. They first met after a Journey concert in Washington in the mid-1990s and maintained contact over the years. After reconnecting romantically in 2011, Michaele began traveling with Schon and Journey.
Her divorce from Tareq was finalized in 2012. Later that year, Schon proposed to Michaele onstage during a charity concert at the Lyric Opera House in Baltimore, presenting her with an 11.42-carat diamond engagement ring.
Wedding to Neal Schon
Michaele married Neal Schon on December 15, 2013, at San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts. The wedding was an enormous production attended by roughly 350 guests and included performances by Journey, Tower of Power, and singer Brian McKnight.
Instead of allowing a television network to tape and later edit the ceremony, the couple produced the event themselves as "Neal & Michaele: The Winter Wonderland Wedding and Music Event." Viewers could watch the approximately three-hour wedding live through pay-per-view for $14.95. A portion of the proceeds was designated for relief efforts following Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, the home country of Journey singer Arnel Pineda.
The wedding eventually produced an unexpected financial dispute with the city of San Francisco. Schon claimed that officials dramatically increased the fee for using the Palace of Fine Arts only days before the ceremony after learning that it would be broadcast commercially. According to his lawsuit, a rental fee originally set at approximately $58,000 increased to roughly $240,000.
Schon and Michaele sued the city. In 2015, San Francisco agreed to a $290,000 settlement resolving the dispute.
Life After Reality Television
Following her marriage to Schon, Michaele largely moved away from the reality television world that had made her famous. She continued to appear publicly with her husband at music-industry events, concerts, and other appearances connected to Journey, but did not pursue another long-running reality series.
Her public identity also increasingly shifted from Michaele Salahi to Michaele Schon. Despite spending only a relatively brief period as a full-time reality television personality, the combination of the White House state-dinner scandal, "The Real Housewives of D.C.," and her highly publicized relationship with one of Journey's founding members made her a durable figure in 2000s and early-2010s celebrity culture.
