Biography & Early Wealth Journey
Hobson has also held leadership positions at some of America's largest corporations. She served on the Starbucks board for approximately 20 years, including terms as vice chair, chair, and lead independent director. When she became chair in 2021, she became the first Black woman to chair the board of an S&P 500 company. She previously chaired DreamWorks Animation and helped oversee the company's $3.8 billion sale to NBCUniversal.
In 2022, Hobson joined the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group that purchased the Denver Broncos for $4.65 billion. She became one of the first Black female owners of an NFL team and has since expanded deeper into sports investing through Ariel's Project Level, a platform focused on women's sports.
Mellody has been married to billionaire filmmaker George Lucas since 2013. Together, they founded the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles and have assembled an enormous collection of art and real estate.
Early Life
Primary Income Streams & Multi-Million Contracts
Mellody Hobson was born on April 3, 1969, in Chicago, Illinois. She was the youngest of six children and was raised primarily by her mother, Dorothy Ashley. Hobson has spoken extensively about growing up with financial insecurity, including periods when her family was evicted or had utilities disconnected. She later credited those experiences with creating both her interest in money and her determination to understand how financial systems work.
Hobson attended St. Ignatius College Prep in Chicago and graduated in 1987. She subsequently enrolled at Princeton University, becoming the first person in her immediate family to graduate from college. She studied at what is now Princeton's School of Public and International Affairs and graduated in 1991.
Ariel Investments
Hobson's relationship with Ariel Investments began while she was still a student. She interned at the firm and joined Ariel full-time after graduating from Princeton. Ariel had been founded in 1983 by John W. Rogers Jr. and specialized in long-term value investing.

Real Estate, Luxury Assets & Personal Investments
Hobson initially worked in marketing and business development before steadily rising through the organization. She became Ariel's president in 2000, a position she held for more than two decades, and was named co-CEO alongside Rogers in 2019.
As co-CEO, Hobson oversees Ariel's management, strategic planning, growth, and business operations outside of investment research and portfolio management. She also chairs the board of trustees of the Ariel Investment Trust, which oversees the company's publicly traded mutual funds. Ariel and its affiliated investment advisers have grown to manage more than $16 billion in assets and commitments.
Ariel Alternatives and Project Black
Hobson helped lead Ariel beyond its traditional public-equity investment business. In 2021, she founded Ariel Alternatives, a private investment business within the firm whose first major strategy was Project Black.
Wealth Trajectory & Future Earnings Projections
Project Black was created to invest in and scale middle-market companies, with the goal of developing larger businesses capable of serving major corporate customers. The initiative represented a significant expansion of Ariel's operations and gave Hobson a direct role in private equity in addition to her decades of experience in traditional asset management.
Project Level and Women's Sports
In 2025, Hobson launched another Ariel investment platform called Project Level, focused specifically on women's sports. The fund was designed to invest in teams, leagues, and businesses benefiting from the rapid growth of women's professional sports.
In early 2026, Hobson announced that Project Level had completed a first close with $250 million in committed capital. Its early investments included Denver Summit FC, an expansion franchise in the National Women's Soccer League, and League One Volleyball. Hobson also serves as an alternate governor of Denver Summit FC, extending her involvement in professional sports beyond the Denver Broncos.
Starbucks
Hobson joined the Starbucks board of directors in 2005 after being recruited by company founder Howard Schultz. She became vice chair in 2018 and was elevated to chair in 2021, making her the first Black woman to chair the board of an S&P 500 company.
Her tenure as chair encompassed the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, executive leadership changes, and major strategic shifts at the coffee company. When Brian Niccol became chairman and CEO in 2024, Hobson transitioned to lead independent director. She retired from the Starbucks board in 2025 after approximately two decades of service.
DreamWorks Animation
Hobson joined the board of DreamWorks Animation in 2004 and became chairwoman in 2012. During her tenure, DreamWorks was home to franchises including "Shrek," "Kung Fu Panda," "Madagascar," and "How to Train Your Dragon."
She played an important role in the company's strategic direction and participated in negotiations that culminated in Comcast's NBCUniversal agreeing to purchase DreamWorks Animation for approximately $3.8 billion in 2016. The acquisition ended DreamWorks Animation's existence as an independent publicly traded company, and Hobson stepped down as chair when the transaction was completed.
JPMorgan Chase and Corporate Boards
Hobson has served on the board of JPMorgan Chase since 2018, giving her another significant source of compensation in addition to her Ariel income. Her annual director compensation has included both cash and deferred stock awards, and she has served on committees dealing with public responsibility and risk.
Earlier in her career, Hobson served for more than a decade on the board of Estée Lauder. Her combination of investment management experience and corporate governance work has made her one of the country's most prominent professional directors.

Denver Broncos
In 2022, Walmart heir Rob Walton, his daughter Carrie Walton Penner, and her husband Greg Penner led the investment group that agreed to purchase the Denver Broncos for $4.65 billion. Hobson joined the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group along with former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton.
The NFL unanimously approved the acquisition in August 2022. At $4.65 billion, the transaction established a record at the time for the purchase of a professional sports franchise. Hobson's individual percentage ownership has not been publicly disclosed, but she has remained an active member of the ownership group rather than functioning solely as a passive investor.
Television and Financial Education
Financial literacy has been one of the recurring themes of Hobson's career. She has appeared as a financial contributor on "Good Morning America" and "CBS This Morning" and has frequently spoken publicly about investing, saving, financial planning, and the racial wealth gap.
In 2009, Hobson hosted and executive produced the ABC television special "Un-Broke: What You Need to Know About Money." The program used celebrities and comedy to explain basic financial concepts to viewers and featured performers including Samuel L. Jackson, Will Smith, Seth Green, Rosario Dawson, and the Jonas Brothers. She later guest-hosted the "Money Issue" edition of "CBS Sunday Morning" and has delivered widely viewed TED Talks about race, investing, and financial behavior.
"Priceless Facts About Money"
In 2024, Hobson published her first children's book, "Priceless Facts About Money." The illustrated book introduces children to basic financial concepts while also exploring the history of money, banking, credit, bartering, saving, and investing.
The book became a "New York Times" bestseller and represented a natural extension of Hobson's longstanding emphasis on financial literacy, particularly for children who may not receive financial education at home. Her friend Oprah Winfrey was among the high-profile figures who promoted the book.
George Lucas
Hobson met George Lucas at a business conference in 2006, and the two began a relationship soon afterward. They became engaged in early 2013 and married on June 22 of that year at Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, California. Their daughter, Everest Hobson Lucas, was born via surrogate in August 2013.
Hobson is also stepmother to Lucas' three older children, Amanda, Katie, and Jett. Despite the enormous difference between their personal fortunes, Hobson established herself as a highly successful investment executive independently of Lucas. George had already built a multibillion-dollar fortune through Lucasfilm, "Star Wars," and related intellectual property before the couple married.
Lucas Museum of Narrative Art
Hobson and Lucas co-founded the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, an ambitious cultural institution developed in Los Angeles' Exposition Park. The approximately $1 billion museum was designed to showcase narrative art across a wide range of media, including painting, illustration, comics, photography, film, and digital art.
Its collection includes works associated with Norman Rockwell, Frida Kahlo, comic books, animation, and Lucas' own film career. Hobson serves as co-chair of the museum and played a major role in the decades-long effort to turn Lucas' collection into a permanent public institution after earlier proposals in San Francisco and Chicago failed to move forward.
Princeton and Hobson College
Princeton University awarded Hobson the Woodrow Wilson Award in 2019, one of the university's highest alumni honors. In 2020, Hobson and the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation made a major gift to Princeton to establish a new residential college bearing her name.
Hobson College is being constructed on the former site of First College, which had previously been known as Wilson College. Princeton had removed Woodrow Wilson's name from the college after reassessing his record on race. For Hobson, having her name placed on a Princeton residential college held particular significance because she arrived at the university as the first person in her immediate family to attend college. The school expects Hobson College to house more than 500 students after it opens.
Awards and Honors
Hobson has received numerous honors for her work in business, finance, education, and philanthropy. "Time" named her one of the world's 100 most influential people in 2015, and she has appeared on influential-business-leader lists published by "Ebony," "Esquire," and "The Wall Street Journal."
In 2018, Hobson received the Order of Lincoln, the highest honor awarded by the state of Illinois, and was inducted as a laureate of the Lincoln Academy of Illinois. She has also received honorary degrees from institutions including Howard University, Johns Hopkins University, St. Mary's College, and the University of Southern California and has served as chair of the Economic Club of Chicago.
Real Estate
Through her marriage to George Lucas, Hobson is connected to an extraordinary portfolio of real estate. Lucas' best-known property is Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, California, an enormous private compound that includes Skywalker Sound's production facilities, screening rooms, offices, guest accommodations, vineyards, gardens, restaurants, and a Victorian-inspired main residence.
The couple has also owned a mansion in San Anselmo, California, an approximately $34 million estate in Bel Air, and a roughly $19 million penthouse in Chicago, where Hobson built her career with Ariel Investments.
Lucas also assembled a substantial oceanfront compound in Carpinteria, California. In 2010, he paid approximately $19.5 million for a beachfront estate, then expanded the compound in 2019 by paying another $28 million for the neighboring property.
The value of the couple's shared real estate is enormous, but George Lucas' multibillion-dollar assets are not included in Mellody Hobson's individual $100 million net worth estimate.
