Biography & Early Wealth Journey
Mel B became internationally famous as one-fifth of the Spice Girls alongside Victoria Beckham, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell, and Emma Bunton. The group's 1996 debut single, "Wannabe," became a worldwide #1 hit and helped launch one of the most successful girl groups in music history. Brown's energetic personality, leopard-print wardrobe, and distinctive vocals made "Scary Spice" one of the defining pop-culture figures of the 1990s.
Outside the Spice Girls, Brown scored a UK #1 solo single with "I Want You Back," released the albums "Hot" and "L.A. State of Mind," performed on Broadway, and established a long television career. She served as a judge on "America's Got Talent" from 2013 through 2018, returned for "America's Got Talent: Fantasy League" in 2024, and rejoined the main judging panel in 2025. She remained a judge during the show's 2026 season.
Brown has also endured highly publicized financial difficulties, particularly during her divorce from producer Stephen Belafonte. Court filings revealed millions of dollars in legal expenses, tax debts, spousal support, and other obligations. Her finances subsequently improved through continued television work, the enormously successful 2019 Spice Girls reunion tour, publishing, and other projects.
Divorce and Financial Problems
Primary Income Streams & Multi-Million Contracts
Mel B's divorce from Stephen Belafonte exposed the extent to which years of high earnings had been offset by taxes, spending, legal costs, and financial obligations. During a 2017 court hearing, Belafonte's attorney claimed Brown had spent approximately $50 million in Spice Girls earnings during what was described as an "extravagant and affluent" lifestyle. Brown's attorneys acknowledged that the couple had accumulated substantial tax liabilities and had regularly spent their annual income without reserving enough to cover taxes.
At the time, Brown was reportedly earning roughly $240,000 per month from "America's Got Talent." British corporate records also showed that she owned approximately 20% of Spice Girls Limited and an interest in another Spice Girls-related company. Despite those assets and earnings, one of her corporate bank accounts reportedly held less than $2,000 during the divorce battle.
In July 2017, Brown was ordered to pay Belafonte temporary spousal support of $40,000 per month. By the following year, court documents showed that she had paid him approximately $422,500 during 2017 in support and contributions toward his legal expenses while also paying the household costs and private-school expenses associated with their daughter.
The legal and professional fees were especially damaging. Brown reported spending more than $1.7 million on attorneys and accountants connected with the divorce. Other disclosed expenses included approximately $121,000 on travel, $63,000 on meals and entertainment, $58,000 on a private investigator, and $49,000 on medical costs.

Real Estate, Luxury Assets & Personal Investments
Her 2018 filings stated that she owed more than $100,000 in credit-card debt and substantial back taxes to the IRS and California Franchise Tax Board, including approximately $800,000 relating to 2016 and an estimated $1 million for 2017. Her wages were being garnished by tax authorities, and she also reported owing nearly $800,000 to various attorneys, forensic accountants, and other professionals.
Brown's financial disclosures listed approximately $76,000 in cash and her share of the Hollywood Hills home she owned with Belafonte as her major remaining assets. She also received child support from Eddie Murphy, the father of her daughter Angel, including approximately $250,000 during 2017 and another $125,000 during the first half of 2018.

Hollywood Hills Home
Wealth Trajectory & Future Earnings Projections
In 2014, Brown and Belafonte paid $4.34 million for a home in the Hollywood Hills. The multilevel property had more than 4,600 square feet of living space with four bedrooms, a gym, theater, game room, recording studio, swimming pool, and spa. They extensively remodeled the house before putting it on the market during their divorce.
The former couple initially sought nearly $9 million for the property in 2017, but the house remained unsold as the asking price was repeatedly reduced. Court filings showed that the property carried a mortgage of approximately $3.1 million, limiting the equity available to Brown and Belafonte after a sale.
They ultimately sold the home in July 2019 for $5.55 million. Although the sale price exceeded what they had paid five years earlier, it was far below their original asking price and came after extensive renovations, carrying costs, commissions, taxes, and the outstanding mortgage were taken into account.

Early Life
Melanie Janine Brown was born on May 29, 1975, in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. Her father, Martin Brown, was from Saint Kitts and Nevis, while her mother, Andrea, is English.
Brown grew up in the Burley area of Leeds and attended Intake High School, a performing-arts school. She developed an interest in dancing and performance when she was young and worked as a dancer before auditioning for the group that would eventually become the Spice Girls.
Spice Girls
In 1994, Brown responded to an advertisement seeking young women for a new pop group. She was selected alongside Melanie Chisholm, Victoria Adams, Geri Halliwell, and Emma Bunton, and the five eventually became the Spice Girls.
The group's first single, "Wannabe," was released in 1996 and became a worldwide phenomenon. It topped the charts in numerous countries, including the United States and United Kingdom, and introduced the group's "Girl Power" message to a massive international audience.
Their debut album, "Spice," produced additional hits including "Say You'll Be There," "2 Become 1," "Who Do You Think You Are," and "Mama." The follow-up album, "Spiceworld," included "Spice Up Your Life," "Too Much," "Stop," and "Viva Forever." Both albums sold tens of millions of copies worldwide.
Each member of the group was given a nickname by the British press. Brown became "Scary Spice," a reference to her bold personality, hairstyles, animal-print clothing, and energetic performance style.
The Spice Girls expanded their popularity beyond records with merchandise, endorsements, television appearances, and the 1997 feature film "Spice World." Their commercial reach made them one of the defining entertainment brands of the late 1990s.

Spice Girls Reunions
The original five members reunited for a world tour in 2007 and 2008. In 2012, all five performed during the closing ceremony of the London Summer Olympics, arriving onstage atop customized London taxis for a medley of "Wannabe" and "Spice Up Your Life."
Brown, Bunton, Halliwell, and Chisholm reunited without Beckham for the "Spice World – 2019 Tour." The short stadium run was enormously successful, selling nearly 700,000 tickets across just 13 concerts in the UK and Ireland and grossing approximately $78 million.
The tour concluded with three sold-out performances at Wembley Stadium that generated more than $27 million in ticket sales. Brown has remained one of the most enthusiastic advocates for another Spice Girls reunion, although the group has not mounted another full tour since 2019.
Solo Music Career
Brown began releasing solo material while the Spice Girls were still active. Her 1998 single "I Want You Back," featuring Missy Elliott, reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart. She followed it with songs including "Word Up!" and "Tell Me."
Her debut solo album, "Hot," was released in 2000 and reached the Top 30 in the United Kingdom. Brown released a second album, "L.A. State of Mind," in 2005.
Although her solo recording career never approached the commercial scale of the Spice Girls, Brown continued recording periodically. She released the single "For Once in My Life" in 2013 and has continued performing solo material alongside Spice Girls songs at concerts and television appearances.
Television Career
Television became one of Brown's most important sources of work after the Spice Girls' initial peak. She competed on the fifth season of "Dancing with the Stars" in 2007, partnering with Maksim Chmerkovskiy and finishing as runner-up.
Brown subsequently became a highly sought-after talent-show judge. She served on "The X Factor Australia" and joined "America's Got Talent" in 2013, sitting alongside judges including Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, and Simon Cowell. She remained on the main American series through 2018.
In 2014, Brown served as a judge on the British version of "The X Factor." She later appeared on programs including "Lip Sync Battle UK," "The Masked Singer Australia," and "Special Forces: World's Toughest Test."
Brown returned to the "Got Talent" franchise in 2024 as a judge on "America's Got Talent: Fantasy League." In 2025, she returned to the main "America's Got Talent" judging panel for the first time in seven years and remained part of the lineup for the 2026 season.
Acting and Stage Career
Brown appeared with the other Spice Girls in the 1997 film "Spice World" and subsequently pursued a range of film, television, and theater projects.
In 2004, she played Mimi in the Broadway production of "Rent." More than a decade later, she returned to Broadway as Roxie Hart in "Chicago," performing in the musical from late 2016 into early 2017.
Her other acting credits have included films and television projects such as "Burn It," "LD 50 Lethal Dose," "The Seat Filler," and "Telling Lies."
Books
Brown published her first autobiography, "Catch a Fire," in 2002. She returned to memoir in 2018 with the much more personal "Brutally Honest," written with journalist Louise Gannon.
In "Brutally Honest," Brown wrote extensively about fame, her marriages, addiction, mental health, and her allegations of domestic abuse. An expanded edition published in 2024 added material covering her efforts to rebuild her life, the 2019 Spice Girls reunion, her advocacy work, and receiving an MBE.
Domestic Abuse Advocacy and MBE
Brown became a patron of the British domestic-abuse charity Women's Aid in 2018. Drawing on what she has described as her own experiences, she has campaigned publicly for greater awareness of coercive control and improved support for survivors.
In 2022, Brown was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire, or MBE, for services to charitable causes and vulnerable women. Prince William presented her with the honor at Buckingham Palace.
Her advocacy has become one of the most prominent parts of her public life outside entertainment.
Personal Life
Brown married Dutch dancer Jimmy Gulzar in 1998. Their daughter, Phoenix Chi, was born in 1999, and the couple divorced in 2000.
Brown later had a relationship with Eddie Murphy. Their daughter, Angel Iris Murphy Brown, was born in April 2007. Murphy initially disputed that he was the father, but a DNA test subsequently confirmed his paternity.
Brown married Stephen Belafonte in Las Vegas in June 2007. Their daughter, Madison, was born in 2011. Brown filed for divorce in March 2017 and made extensive allegations of physical, emotional, and financial abuse in court filings; Belafonte denied the allegations. Their divorce became final in December 2017, although financial, custody, and other legal disputes continued afterward.
Belafonte filed a $5 million defamation lawsuit against Brown in 2024 challenging public statements she had made about their marriage and her abuse allegations. That litigation remained active in federal court in 2026.
After returning to her hometown of Leeds, Brown began dating hairstylist Rory McPhee in 2019. They became engaged in 2022 and married on July 5, 2025, at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. Her three daughters participated in the wedding, and Emma Bunton was among the guests.
Brown and McPhee later held a second wedding celebration in Morocco. The relationship marked Brown's third marriage.
Financial Recovery
Following the collapse of her second marriage, Brown returned to Leeds and spent a period living in a bungalow on her mother's property while rebuilding her finances and personal life. She later said that years of divorce litigation and related expenses had left her needing to start over financially despite the enormous sums she had earned during her career.
Brown eventually purchased a home of her own again in England. Her return to major television work, the $78 million-grossing 2019 Spice Girls stadium tour, publishing income, appearances, and her subsequent return to "America's Got Talent" provided significant new income streams after the financial crisis documented during her divorce.
