Biography & Early Wealth Journey

Barris became one of the highest-profile television creators in Hollywood when he signed a production and development agreement with Netflix in 2018 that was widely reported to be worth more than $100 million over three years. He left the deal early in 2021 and became a partner in BET Studios, expanding his Khalabo Ink Society production company across television, film, and other media.

In 2023, Barris made his feature-film directing debut with the Netflix comedy "You People," which he co-wrote with Jonah Hill. His subsequent producing work has included "The Vince Staples Show" and "Diarra from Detroit."

Early Life and Education

Kenya Barris was born on August 9, 1974, in Inglewood, California. His father worked for General Motors, while his mother became a real estate agent. He was named Kenya after his father's visit to the African country. His parents divorced when he was young.

Primary Income Streams & Multi-Million Contracts

Barris grew up in the Los Angeles area and attended Clark Atlanta University, a historically Black university in Atlanta, Georgia. He later established a scholarship at the school and has maintained ties to his alma mater.

Early Television Career

Barris began establishing himself as a television writer around the turn of the millennium. One of his earliest major credits was the UPN sitcom "Girlfriends," where he worked alongside creator Mara Brock Akil. The series became one of the defining Black ensemble comedies of the era and ran for eight seasons.

He also worked as a writer on the Showtime drama "Soul Food" and the CBS sitcom "Listen Up!"

Real Estate, Luxury Assets & Personal Investments

One of Barris's most financially and professionally important early projects came through his longtime friend Tyra Banks. Barris helped develop and co-create "America's Next Top Model," which debuted in 2003 and grew into an international reality television franchise. The American version ultimately ran for 24 cycles through 2018.

Barris later wrote for "The Game," the spinoff of "Girlfriends," as well as "Are We There Yet?" and "I Hate My Teenage Daughter."

"black-ish"

Barris reached a new level of success in 2014 when ABC premiered "black-ish," the sitcom he created about an affluent Black family living in Los Angeles.

Anthony Anderson starred as advertising executive Andre "Dre" Johnson, with Tracee Ellis Ross playing his wife, Rainbow. The ensemble also included Laurence Fishburne, Jenifer Lewis, Yara Shahidi, Marcus Scribner, Miles Brown, and Marsai Martin.

Although structured as a family sitcom, "black-ish" regularly tackled issues involving race, identity, politics, class, parenting, and assimilation. Barris drew heavily from his own family and experiences, including his marriage to an anesthesiologist named Rainbow and raising six children.

The show became both a critical and commercial success. It won a Peabody Award and numerous NAACP Image Awards, while Ross won a Golden Globe for her performance.

"black-ish" ran for eight seasons and concluded in 2022.

"grown-ish" and "mixed-ish"

The success of "black-ish" turned the series into a broader television franchise.

Barris and Larry Wilmore created "grown-ish," which premiered in 2018 and followed Yara Shahidi's Zoey Johnson as she left home for college and entered adulthood. The series moved beyond its original college setting over the course of six seasons before ending in 2024.

Barris also co-created the prequel series "mixed-ish" with Peter Saji and Tracee Ellis Ross. Inspired partly by the childhood of Barris's wife, Rania "Rainbow" Barris, the show explored Rainbow Johnson's experiences growing up in a mixed-race family during the 1980s. "mixed-ish" aired for two seasons from 2019 to 2021.

$100 Million Netflix Deal

In 2018, Barris left his overall relationship with ABC Studios and signed an exclusive production and development agreement with Netflix.

The deal was widely reported to be worth more than $100 million over three years, putting Barris in the same wave of major television creators who received enormous streaming-era production agreements.

His first major Netflix series was "#blackAF," which premiered in 2020. Barris created, wrote, directed, produced, and starred in the show as a fictionalized version of himself opposite Rashida Jones.

The Netflix relationship did not last for the full expected term. Barris negotiated an early exit in 2021 after deciding that the streaming service was not the ideal home for the type of programming he wanted to create.

He subsequently became one of the founding creative partners in BET Studios, a studio venture established within ViacomCBS, later Paramount Global. Barris continued producing projects through his Khalabo Ink Society banner.

Later Television Career

Barris's post-"black-ish" television work has increasingly involved producing projects created by other writers and performers.

He executive produced Kid Cudi's animated Netflix project "Entergalactic" and later became an executive producer of "The Vince Staples Show," the surreal Netflix comedy built around rapper Vince Staples.

Barris also executive produced "Diarra from Detroit," created by and starring Diarra Kilpatrick. The mystery-comedy became the first scripted series to emerge from BET Studios.

His production company has also expanded into audio programming and other formats in addition to traditional film and television.

Film Career

Barris moved aggressively into feature films during the second half of the 2010s.

He co-wrote the 2016 comedy "Barbershop: The Next Cut" and followed it with the 2017 hit "Girls Trip," which starred Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Tiffany Haddish. The film was a major commercial success and helped propel Haddish to mainstream stardom.

Barris subsequently co-wrote the 2019 "Shaft" reboot and worked with Robert Zemeckis and Guillermo del Toro on the screenplay for the 2020 adaptation of Roald Dahl's "The Witches."

He was one of the writers of 2021's "Coming 2 America," which reunited Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall more than three decades after the original film. Barris also co-wrote and produced Disney's 2022 version of "Cheaper by the Dozen."

In 2023, Barris made his feature directing debut with "You People," which he co-wrote with Jonah Hill. Hill starred alongside Lauren London, Eddie Murphy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Nia Long, and David Duchovny.

That same year, Barris received a screenplay credit on the remake of "White Men Can't Jump." He subsequently produced the Snoop Dogg sports comedy "The Underdoggs."

Personal Life

Barris married Dr. Rania "Rainbow" Edwards, an anesthesiologist, in 1999. They have six children together.

Their relationship became one of the inspirations for "black-ish" and later "#blackAF." The couple went through several periods of marital difficulty and divorce proceedings. Barris filed for divorce again in 2022 after more than two decades of marriage.

Real Estate

Barris has assembled a substantial Los Angeles real estate portfolio over the course of his Hollywood career.

In 2017, he paid about $2.9 million for a home in Encino. Two years later, he paid roughly $7.6 million for another, much larger Encino mansion.

In May 2020, Kenya paid $4.6 million for a home in Studio City, California.

In 2021, Barris paid $7.25 million for a waterfront property in Toluca Lake. The Spanish-style estate spans roughly 6,500 square feet.

His most expensive known purchase came in early 2023, when he paid $18.4 million for a contemporary estate in Beverly Hills that had previously belonged to Grammy-winning producer and DJ Zedd. Zedd had paid $16 million for the property several years earlier and initially sought $26.5 million when he put it on the market.

The Beverly Hills compound sits on approximately 3.2 acres in Benedict Canyon. Built in 2016, the roughly 11,000-square-foot residence has five bedrooms and nine bathrooms, along with an infinity pool, movie theater, billiards room, rooftop deck, guesthouse, and four-car garage.

In August 2026, Barris listed the property for $20.8 million. Here is a video tour:

At the time he placed the Beverly Hills estate on the market, Barris continued to own the $7.25 million Toluca Lake residence as well as the Encino home he had purchased for approximately $2.9 million in 2017.
