Biography & Early Wealth Journey

Juan Mata built his fortune during a career that included major spells with Valencia, Chelsea, and Manchester United, along with later stops in Turkey, Japan, and Australia. Known for his vision, passing, set-piece ability, and technical intelligence, he won virtually every major trophy available to him, including the FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championship, UEFA Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup, Copa del Rey, and league championships in Turkey and Japan.

Mata became an international star at Chelsea, where he was voted the club's Player of the Year in consecutive seasons and helped deliver the 2012 Champions League and 2013 Europa League titles. Manchester United subsequently paid a then-club-record £37.1 million to acquire him in January 2014. He spent more than eight years at Old Trafford, making 285 appearances and winning another Europa League, the FA Cup, and League Cup.

Late in his playing career, Mata expanded aggressively into sports ownership and investing. He became an investor in Major League Soccer club San Diego FC, invested in the Alpine Formula One team and women's soccer ownership group Mercury 13, and acquired an ownership stake in Melbourne Victory. After producing an outstanding 2025-26 season for Victory and being named the A-League's best player, Mata ended his playing commitments with the club in September 2026 and moved toward an executive role as chair of its football committee.

Early Life

Primary Income Streams & Multi-Million Contracts

Juan Manuel Mata García was born on April 28, 1988, in Burgos, Spain. His father, Juan Manuel Mata Rodríguez, had also played professional soccer, and the family later settled in Asturias in northern Spain.

Mata began playing organized soccer with Real Oviedo and joined Real Madrid's youth academy as a teenager. He progressed through the club's system and eventually played for Real Madrid Castilla, scoring 10 league goals during the 2006-07 season.

Despite his success in Madrid's youth system, Mata saw a clearer path to first-team soccer elsewhere. In 2007, he left Real Madrid for Valencia, a decision that gave him an immediate opportunity to play at the highest level.

Valencia

Real Estate, Luxury Assets & Personal Investments

Mata quickly established himself at Valencia and became one of the most promising young attacking midfielders in Spanish soccer. Capable of playing centrally or from either side, he combined playmaking with consistent goal production.

During his first season, Valencia won the 2008 Copa del Rey. Mata scored in the semifinal against Barcelona and again in the final as Valencia defeated Getafe 3-1.

Across four seasons with Valencia, he made more than 170 appearances in all competitions and scored 46 goals. His performances attracted interest from several major English clubs, and in August 2011, Chelsea acquired him for a reported £23.5 million.

Chelsea

Wealth Trajectory & Future Earnings Projections

Mata's move to Chelsea immediately elevated his international profile. He adapted quickly to English soccer and became the team's primary creative playmaker during one of the most dramatic seasons in club history.

In May 2012, Chelsea defeated Liverpool in the FA Cup final, with Mata setting up Ramires' opening goal. A few weeks later, Chelsea faced Bayern Munich in the Champions League final at Bayern's own stadium. Mata's late corner was headed in by Didier Drogba to force extra time, and Chelsea ultimately won the trophy on penalties.

Chelsea supporters voted Mata Player of the Year at the end of that season.

The following campaign was arguably even better individually. Mata recorded 20 goals and 30 assists across all competitions and again won Chelsea's Player of the Year award. He also helped Chelsea win the 2013 Europa League, providing the corner from which Branislav Ivanović scored the winning goal in the final against Benfica.

In just two full seasons, Mata became one of Chelsea's most popular players. His situation changed after José Mourinho returned as manager in 2013, and Mata found himself receiving less playing time.

Manchester United Transfer

In January 2014, Manchester United paid Chelsea £37.1 million for Mata. The deal broke United's transfer record at the time, surpassing the previous mark established when the club acquired Dimitar Berbatov.

The transfer also represented a substantial profit for Chelsea, which had paid approximately £23.5 million for Mata less than three years earlier.

Mata joined a United squad featuring stars including Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie. Although the club went through considerable managerial instability during his tenure, Mata became one of its most dependable and popular players.

One of his most memorable moments came in March 2015 when he scored twice against Liverpool at Anfield, including an acrobatic bicycle kick that became known among United supporters simply as the "Juanfield" goal.

Manchester United Success

Mata spent more than eight years with Manchester United, playing under David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, José Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, and several interim managers.

His first major trophy with the club came in the 2016 FA Cup final against Crystal Palace. Mata scored United's equalizer before Jesse Lingard struck the extra-time winner.

United added the Community Shield, EFL Cup, and Europa League during the following season. Mata remained an important part of the squad as United defeated Ajax in the 2017 Europa League final.

By the time he left the club in 2022, Mata had made 285 appearances, scored 51 goals, and supplied 47 assists. His longevity at United turned what had originally been a record-breaking midseason transfer into the longest club relationship of his professional career.

Salary and Career Earnings

Mata earned the majority of his playing fortune during his years in the English Premier League.

CelebrityNetWorth's historical salary data estimates that Mata earned approximately $75 million in Manchester United salary alone from 2014 through the end of his contract in 2022. Those earnings came before taxes, agent fees, and other expenses and do not include his Chelsea salary, endorsement contracts, international bonuses, or later overseas contracts.

After leaving United, Mata signed with Galatasaray in September 2022. The Turkish club publicly disclosed that his guaranteed net salary for the 2022-23 season was €1.9 million.

Mata has also maintained a long-term relationship with Adidas and has worked with other luxury and consumer brands during his career.

Spain

Mata belonged to one of the greatest generations in international soccer history.

He represented Spain at numerous youth levels before making his senior debut in 2009. Mata was selected for Spain's squad at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, where the country won its first world championship.

Two years later, Spain defended its European Championship title at Euro 2012. Mata came off the bench in the final against Italy and scored Spain's fourth goal in a 4-0 victory.

That triumph completed an extraordinary period for Spanish soccer in which the national team won Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup, and Euro 2012. Mata finished his senior international career with 41 appearances and 10 goals.

He also captained Spain's under-21 team to victory at the 2011 European Under-21 Championship.

Galatasaray and Vissel Kobe

Following the end of his Manchester United contract, Mata joined Galatasaray in Turkey in 2022.

His stay lasted one season, but it produced the first domestic league championship of his career. Galatasaray won the 2022-23 Süper Lig title.

Mata then moved to Japan to join Vissel Kobe in September 2023. Although he played sparingly, the season ended with another championship as Vissel Kobe captured the first J1 League title in club history.

That gave Mata league titles in two different countries in consecutive seasons near the end of his career.

Australia

Mata moved to Australia in September 2024, signing with Western Sydney Wanderers. He made 23 A-League appearances during the 2024-25 season but started only seven matches and scored one goal.

Rather than leave Australia, Mata signed a one-year contract with Melbourne Victory in September 2025. The move produced an extraordinary late-career revival.

During the 2025-26 A-League season, Mata recorded five goals and 13 assists. His 13 assists led the competition, and he was named the recipient of the Johnny Warren Medal as the A-League's best player. He also won Melbourne Victory's club medal and Players' Player award.

In September 2026, Mata announced that he would conclude his playing commitments with Melbourne Victory. Rather than completely severing his relationship with the club, he shifted his focus toward ownership and management.

Soccer Ownership and Investments

Mata began investing in professional sports while he was still playing.

In 2024, he became an investor and partner in Major League Soccer expansion club San Diego FC. The investment made Mata the first active international soccer player to hold an ownership stake in an MLS franchise. David Beckham, an owner of Inter Miami, was the only other international player at the time to be involved in MLS ownership.

Mata also became a strategic investor in Alpine Racing, the Formula One organization backed by Renault, through an investment group organized by Otro Capital.

In 2025, Mata joined Mercury 13, an investment group focused on acquiring and developing women's professional soccer clubs.

His most direct post-playing transition came with Melbourne Victory. In 2026, Mata purchased an ownership interest in the Australian club. After ending his playing commitments, he remained part of the ownership group and became chair of a newly created football committee responsible for helping guide the club's sporting operations.

These investments have begun shifting Mata's financial profile from that of a retired athlete earning primarily from past salaries and endorsements toward that of a sports owner with equity in multiple organizations.

Common Goal

Mata has been unusually active in philanthropy throughout his playing career.

In 2017, he became the first prominent player to publicly pledge 1% of his salary to a soccer-based social-impact initiative that developed into Common Goal. Other players, coaches, clubs, and companies subsequently followed.

The Common Goal movement has grown to include more than 500 participating stakeholders, including more than 200 professional athletes. The organization's 1% pledge has mobilized more than €15 million for projects using soccer to address social and community issues.

Mata eventually became co-chair of Common Goal's board of directors.

In 2025, King Charles III awarded Mata an honorary MBE for his services to sport and charity.

Personal Life

Mata has long been known as one of professional soccer's more academically and culturally inclined players. During his career, he studied marketing and sports science and developed interests in literature, photography, art, travel, and business.

His father, Juan Manuel Mata Rodríguez, became a soccer agent after his own playing career and has been involved professionally with his son's career.

Mata's interests outside the sport increasingly informed his post-playing plans. Rather than pursue only coaching or broadcasting, he began building a portfolio of ownership positions in soccer and other sports while maintaining a leadership role in Common Goal.

By the time he stepped away from regular playing duties in 2026, Mata had assembled one of the most complete résumés of his generation: a World Cup, European Championship, Champions League, two Europa League titles, major domestic cups in Spain and England, league championships in Turkey and Japan, and an individual Player of the Year award earned in Australia at age 38.
