Biography & Early Wealth Journey

Josh Richards became one of TikTok's first major male stars while still a teenager, then used that audience to build a career that extended well beyond sponsored videos. After developing a following on Musical.ly and TikTok, he helped launch the Los Angeles creator collective Sway House and co-founded the talent-management company TalentX Entertainment. He subsequently became an investor and executive at TikTok rival Triller, co-founded the beverage company Ani Energy with Bryce Hall, launched the production company CrossCheck Studios, and became an operating partner and co-founder of venture capital firm Animal Capital. Richards also co-hosted Barstool Sports' "BFFs" podcast, initially alongside Dave Portnoy and Brianna LaPaglia. By his early 20s, creator-industry estimates were consistently placing his annual earnings in the millions. In 2026, Forbes estimated that Richards earned $6 million during its measurement period, while his CrossCheck-produced sketch series "Read the Room" expanded through a partnership with Fox Creator Studios.

Early Life

Joshua Kenneth Richards was born on January 31, 2002, in Ontario, Canada, and grew up in the small town of Cobourg, about an hour east of Toronto. He was interested in hockey from childhood and initially imagined that sports might play a major role in his future.

Richards also displayed an entrepreneurial streak unusually early. At 13, he and a friend created a hockey merchandise business called Berserk Hockey, designing logos and clothing for local teams. A few years later, he ran social-media accounts devoted to sports highlights and began experimenting with Musical.ly.

Primary Income Streams & Multi-Million Contracts

Richards has recalled realizing that social media could become a business when viewers began sending virtual gifts during his live broadcasts. At 14, he checked his account and discovered that those gifts had produced $96. It was not a significant sum in absolute terms, but to Richards it demonstrated that an online audience could be monetized.

By middle school, he had reportedly created a written plan for becoming a millionaire. At the beginning of his final year of high school, Richards made a presentation to his parents arguing that he should move to Los Angeles to pursue social media professionally. He left Canada for Los Angeles in 2019 while still a teenager.

Musical.ly and TikTok

Richards built an audience of hundreds of thousands on Musical.ly through lip-syncing, dancing, comedy, and personality-driven videos. When Musical.ly was absorbed into TikTok, he studied the new platform closely and adjusted his content to what generated the most comments, shares, and engagement.

Real Estate, Luxury Assets & Personal Investments

The strategy worked. His TikTok following exploded into the tens of millions just as the app was becoming a major force in American popular culture.

Richards belonged to the same early wave of TikTok stars as Charli D'Amelio, Addison Rae, Bryce Hall, and other creators who turned short-form videos into full-time entertainment careers.

Rather than focus entirely on maximizing sponsorship income, Richards became increasingly interested in using his audience to acquire ownership interests in businesses. That approach became one of the defining characteristics of his career.

Sway House

Wealth Trajectory & Future Earnings Projections

In early 2020, Richards became one of the central figures in Sway House, a TikTok collective created through TalentX Entertainment.

Richards, Bryce Hall, Griffin Johnson, Jaden Hossler, Anthony Reeves, and Kio Cyr were among the creators associated with the group. Several members lived together in a roughly 7,800-square-foot mansion in Bel Air, where they collaborated on videos and promoted one another to their rapidly growing audiences.

Sway became the male counterpart to creator collectives such as Hype House and generated enormous attention during the first major TikTok boom. The combination of young creators, a Los Angeles mansion, relationships, parties, and social-media feuds frequently made the group's personal lives almost as important to fans as the content itself.

Richards eventually distanced himself from the house's party-heavy image and focused more heavily on business. Sway House formally came to an end in 2021.

TalentX

Richards was also a co-founder of TalentX Entertainment, a management and creator-development company established as TikTok personalities were beginning to attract major advertising budgets.

TalentX represented creators including Richards, Bryce Hall, and Noah Beck. Within months of launching, the company had accumulated dozens of clients and became one of the better-known management firms focused specifically on TikTok talent.

The company typically participated in the economics of brand deals negotiated for its roster, allowing Richards to benefit from the creator economy from both sides: as a creator himself and as an owner of infrastructure serving other creators.

TalentX was also behind the formation of Sway House.

Creator Earnings

Richards began earning seven figures while he was still a teenager. Forbes estimated that he generated roughly $1.5 million during the 12-month period used for its inaugural ranking of TikTok earners in 2020.

His income climbed quickly. Forbes later estimated that Richards earned approximately $5 million in 2021 from sponsorships and his various business ventures.

His earning power proved considerably more durable than the first TikTok boom. Forbes estimated his annual earnings at $6 million in its 2024 ranking of creators, again at $6 million in 2025, and again at $6 million in its 2026 ranking. The publication credited his more recent income to brand relationships, media ventures, and other creator businesses. His 2026 partnerships included companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta.

Those figures represent gross earnings estimates rather than additions to net worth. Taxes, management and agent commissions, business expenses, investments, and personal spending all reduce the amount that ultimately becomes personal wealth.

Triller

Richards made one of his most notable early business moves in July 2020 when he became chief strategy officer of Triller, a social-video platform attempting to compete with TikTok.

Importantly, Richards took equity rather than a conventional salary for the executive position. Griffin Johnson and Noah Beck also became advisors and shareholders.

The deal demonstrated the approach Richards increasingly favored: exchanging access to his audience and cultural influence for ownership rather than simply accepting cash endorsement fees. The eventual value of his Triller equity has never been publicly disclosed.

Ani Energy and Other Investments

Richards and Bryce Hall also co-founded Ani Energy, a caffeinated beverage brand aimed largely at Gen Z consumers. Instead of merely promoting an established energy drink, the two attempted to use their audiences to build equity in a consumer brand of their own.

Richards made similar investments in other businesses. At various points, his portfolio has included stakes or advisory roles involving companies such as Poppi, UnHide, Dog for Dog, Lolli, Step, and other consumer and technology startups.

One particularly notable investment was Poppi. Richards invested in the prebiotic soda company years before PepsiCo acquired Poppi in 2025 in a transaction valued at $1.95 billion. Richards' individual ownership percentage and proceeds from the acquisition were never publicly disclosed, so it would be inappropriate to assume he personally received a large share of the purchase price.

He has also been associated with Dog for Dog alongside Snoop Dogg and with UnHide, the faux-fur company founded with backing from Ellen DeGeneres.

Animal Capital

Richards expanded from angel investing into institutional venture capital through Animal Capital, an early-stage investment firm led by Marshall Sandman. Richards became an operating partner and co-founder, using his experience with young consumers and digital media as part of the firm's investment strategy.

Animal Capital initially concentrated on relatively small early-stage technology and consumer investments. Its first fund raised $13 million, followed by a $16 million second fund.

In June 2026, Animal Capital closed a third fund with $33 million in commitments. Across those three vehicles, the firm had raised a combined $62 million. Its portfolio has included companies such as Whatnot, Colossal Biosciences, Whop, and Underdog Sports, while earlier funds produced exits involving companies acquired by Snapchat, Shopify, BIC, and eBay.

The $62 million represents money committed by the funds' investors, not Richards' personal fortune. His economics can instead come from his ownership interest in the management company, management fees, carried interest in successful investments, and any personal investments he makes alongside the funds.

Animal Capital's investor network has included entrepreneurs and celebrities such as MrBeast, Paris Hilton, Christina Aguilera, Pete Davidson, and Mark Wahlberg.

CrossCheck Studios

In 2021, Richards launched CrossCheck Studios, a production company built around the idea that internet-native creators could develop traditional entertainment without surrendering control of their audiences.

The company initially partnered with Mark Wahlberg's production company, Unrealistic Ideas. CrossCheck later entered a first-look film-development agreement with STXfilms.

CrossCheck became an increasingly important part of Richards' career as he moved from influencer marketing into owning and producing entertainment. Its projects have included "Read the Room," a sketch-comedy series starring Richards.

The first season of "Read the Room" generated more than 60 million views across platforms in its first four weeks. In 2026, Fox Creator Studios partnered with CrossCheck on seasons two and three, with Fox providing production support and handling media sales. Season two premiered in August 2026.

Richards had personally financed the first season, making the Fox partnership an important step toward turning the series into a self-sustaining media property rather than simply another social-media channel.

"BFFs" Podcast

In 2020, Richards teamed with Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy to launch "BFFs," a podcast designed around the unlikely pairing of a middle-aged sports-media entrepreneur and one of TikTok's biggest teenage stars.

Brianna "Chickenfry" LaPaglia soon became the third regular host. The show covered creator drama, celebrity relationships, sports, entertainment, and internet culture and became one of Richards' most durable media projects.

The podcast also served as a bridge between TikTok and the older internet-media ecosystem. Portnoy brought Barstool's established audience and advertising business, while Richards provided direct access to the younger creator world.

Portnoy stepped away from regular hosting at the end of 2024, after which Richards and LaPaglia continued the show together. "BFFs" ultimately ended in December 2025 after more than five years.

Acting and Music

Richards has experimented with acting and music throughout his career. He signed a recording agreement with Warner Records during the early TikTok boom and released music while also pursuing film opportunities.

His acting credits include "Summertime Dropouts," "Under the Stadium Lights," and the 2023 dark comedy "Dream Scenario," which starred Nicolas Cage.

Producing eventually became more important to his entertainment ambitions than pursuing conventional acting roles, culminating in the development of "Read the Room" through CrossCheck.

Personal Life

Richards dated singer and social-media personality Nessa Barrett from 2019 until 2021. Their breakup received substantial attention within the TikTok community.

He later began dating Brazilian creator Gabriela "Gabi" Moura. The two first connected online before meeting in person in 2023 and subsequently began appearing regularly together on social media.

Richards has remained based in Los Angeles while maintaining close ties to Canada. His career has evolved substantially from the dancing and lip-syncing videos that first made him famous. By his mid-20s, he had established businesses spanning venture capital, film and television production, podcasts, consumer products, advertising, and startup investing while continuing to maintain one of the largest audiences from TikTok's original generation of stars.
