Early Life and Education
Eric Roth was born on March 22, 1945, in Manhattan and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, Columbia University, and the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. While studying at UCLA, he won the Samuel Goldwyn Writing Award in 1970, an early indication of the career that would follow. He became a member of the Writers Guild of America West in 1971.

Real Estate
In June 2000, Eric spent $4.5 million to acquire an oceanfront home in the gated Malibu Colony section of Malibu. The home, originally built in 1928, featured approximately 31 feet of beachfront and had previously been owned by singer Linda Ronstadt and "Police Academy" producer Paul Maslansky.
In October 2018, Eric listed the Malibu property for approximately $16 million. After changing agents and making several price adjustments, he reduced the asking price to around $14 million the following year. In August 2019, Eric purchased a slightly more modest home in Santa Monica for $4.4 million.
