Early Life and Education
Delta Goodrem was born on November 9, 1984, in Sydney, Australia, to Lea and Denis Goodrem. She has a younger brother named Trent and attended the Hills Grammar School. Goodrem developed an interest in performing as a child, studying singing, dancing, and piano. At seven, she appeared in an American advertisement for a toy company, followed by commercials for brands including Nesquik and Optus. Music Career Breakthroughs
At age 13, Goodrem recorded a five-song demo that reached talent manager Glenn Wheatley, who signed her to an artist development deal with Empire Records. She subsequently secured a recording contract with Sony Music at 15. Her breakthrough came in late 2002 with the piano ballad "Born to Try," which reached number one in Australia. The song's exposure on "Neighbours," where Goodrem played an aspiring singer, helped connect her television audience with her music.
"Lost Without You" became another number-one single in early 2003, setting the stage for the March release of "Innocent Eyes." The album spent 29 nonconsecutive weeks atop the ARIA Albums Chart and became one of the best-selling albums in Australian history. Its five singles—"Born to Try," "Lost Without You," "Innocent Eyes," "Not Me, Not I," and "Predictable"—all reached number one. Goodrem also enjoyed success internationally, establishing an audience beyond the Australian television viewers who had first watched her on "Neighbours."
