Biography & Early Wealth Journey

Dani Alves is widely regarded as one of the greatest right-backs in soccer history. During a career spanning more than two decades, he played for Bahia, Sevilla, Barcelona, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, São Paulo, and UNAM, while also making more than 120 appearances for the Brazilian national team. He won more than 40 major trophies, including three UEFA Champions League titles, six La Liga championships, two Copa América titles, two UEFA Cups, and an Olympic gold medal.

Alves spent the defining years of his career with Barcelona, where his attacking runs down the right side and partnership with Lionel Messi helped make him a central figure in one of the most successful teams in soccer history. He made 408 official appearances for Barcelona across two stints and won 23 major trophies with the club. Alves was once recognized as the most decorated player in professional soccer, although Messi subsequently surpassed his career trophy total.

Alves' post-playing life has been dominated by a highly publicized criminal case in Spain. He was arrested in January 2023 over an allegation that he sexually assaulted a woman in a Barcelona nightclub. A trial court convicted him in February 2024 and sentenced him to four and a half years in prison. In March 2025, the Catalonia High Court unanimously overturned the conviction and acquitted Alves, finding that the evidence was insufficient to sustain a conviction. Prosecutors and the complainant subsequently appealed the acquittal to Spain's Supreme Court.

Early Life

Primary Income Streams & Multi-Million Contracts

Daniel Alves da Silva was born on May 6, 1983, in Juazeiro, Bahia, Brazil. He grew up in a working-class family and began helping his father on the family's farm at a young age. His father, Domingos Alves da Silva, was an enthusiastic football fan who organized a local team and encouraged his son's interest in the sport.

Dani initially played as a winger but was eventually moved to right-back because of his speed, stamina, and ability to cover the entire side of the field. He joined the youth system of local club Juazeiro before moving into Bahia's academy.

Alves made his professional debut for Bahia in 2001. His performances quickly attracted attention from European scouts, beginning a career that would eventually make him one of the most successful Brazilian players of his generation.

Bahia and Sevilla

Real Estate, Luxury Assets & Personal Investments

Alves broke into Bahia's senior team while still a teenager and helped the club win regional honors. In 2002, Spanish club Sevilla acquired him initially on loan before making the transfer permanent.

His six years in Seville established Alves as one of Europe's best attacking full-backs. Sevilla won back-to-back UEFA Cups in 2006 and 2007, as well as the 2007 Copa del Rey, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Spanish Super Cup.

Alves' performances made him a target for several of Europe's largest clubs. In 2008, Barcelona acquired him in a deal that made him one of the most expensive defenders in soccer at the time.

Barcelona

Wealth Trajectory & Future Earnings Projections

Alves joined Barcelona in the summer of 2008, just as Pep Guardiola took over as manager. His arrival coincided with one of the greatest periods in the club's history.

During his first season, Barcelona won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League, completing the club's first treble. The team then added the Spanish Super Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup to complete an unprecedented six-trophy haul across the calendar year.

Alves became particularly effective in combination with Messi on Barcelona's right side. His ability to overlap, cross, create chances, and recover defensively allowed Messi greater freedom to move inside, and the pair became one of the club's defining partnerships.

Barcelona continued collecting trophies throughout Alves' first stint. He won six La Liga titles, four Copa del Rey trophies, three Champions League titles, three FIFA Club World Cups, and multiple domestic and European super cups.

2015 Treble and Departure

Alves was a key member of the Barcelona team that won another treble during the 2014-15 season. Playing alongside Messi, Neymar, and Luis Suárez, Barcelona won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Champions League.

The Champions League victory was Alves' third with the club. Barcelona defeated Juventus 3-1 in the final in Berlin.

Alves remained for one more season before leaving Barcelona on a free transfer in 2016. His first Barcelona spell ended with him firmly established among the most successful players in the club's history.

Juventus

Alves joined Juventus in 2016 and spent one season in Italy. Despite the short stay, he added another domestic double to his trophy collection by winning Serie A and the Coppa Italia.

Juventus also reached the 2017 UEFA Champions League final. Alves played an important role in the club's run, including standout performances during the knockout rounds, but Juventus lost the final to Real Madrid.

Alves left after one season when his contract was terminated by mutual agreement.

Paris Saint-Germain

In July 2017, Alves joined Paris Saint-Germain, where he reunited with several Brazilian teammates and became part of a squad built around major stars including Neymar and later Kylian Mbappé.

Alves won Ligue 1 in both of his seasons in Paris. During his first campaign, PSG also won the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue, giving him another domestic treble.

He left the club when his contract expired in 2019.

São Paulo

Alves returned to Brazil in 2019 and signed with São Paulo, the club he had supported as a child. He was given the number 10 shirt and at times played farther forward in midfield rather than in his traditional right-back position.

In 2021, São Paulo won the Campeonato Paulista, ending a lengthy trophy drought for the club and adding another title to Alves' collection.

His tenure ended later that year amid a financial dispute. Alves stopped playing for São Paulo over unpaid image-rights compensation, and the sides subsequently terminated his contract.

Return to Barcelona

Late in 2021, Alves returned to Barcelona after more than five years away from the club. His former teammate Xavi had recently become Barcelona's manager and brought the veteran defender back to provide experience to a young squad.

Because of registration rules, Alves could not begin playing competitive matches until January 2022. He ultimately made 17 appearances during his second stint.

When he left again in the summer of 2022, Alves had accumulated 408 official appearances for Barcelona. He remains among the club's leading foreign-born appearance makers, behind Messi.

UNAM Pumas

After leaving Barcelona, Alves moved to Mexico and signed with Liga MX club UNAM, commonly known as Pumas, in July 2022.

He appeared regularly during his first months with the club. His tenure ended abruptly in January 2023 after he was arrested in Spain in connection with an alleged sexual assault. Pumas terminated his contract shortly after the arrest.

That proved to be Alves' final professional club.

Brazil National Team

Alves also had an exceptionally successful international career with Brazil. He won the FIFA World Youth Championship in 2003 before becoming a regular member of the senior national team.

He was part of the Brazil squad that won the Copa América in 2007 and subsequently helped the country win the FIFA Confederations Cup in both 2009 and 2013. Alves represented Brazil at the 2010, 2014, and 2022 FIFA World Cups.

One of his most significant late-career accomplishments came at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. At age 38, Alves captained Brazil to the men's soccer gold medal, becoming one of the oldest players ever to win Olympic soccer gold.

He also captained Brazil to the 2019 Copa América title and was named the tournament's most valuable player. At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the 39-year-old became the oldest Brazilian player to appear in a World Cup match.

Trophies and Records

For several years, Alves was widely described as the most decorated professional footballer in history. Depending on which competitions are included, career totals can vary, but Alves accumulated more than 40 recognized team trophies across club and international competition.

His collection includes three Champions League titles, two UEFA Cups, six La Liga championships, two Ligue 1 titles, one Serie A title, two Copa América championships, two Confederations Cups, an Olympic gold medal, and numerous domestic cups and super cups.

Alves eventually lost the all-time record to former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi, whose subsequent titles with Argentina and Inter Miami moved him ahead. Alves nonetheless remains among the most decorated players in the history of the sport.

Arrest and Initial Conviction

In January 2023, Alves was arrested in Barcelona after a woman accused him of sexually assaulting her in a bathroom at Sutton nightclub on December 31, 2022. Alves denied that the encounter was non-consensual.

He remained in pretrial detention for more than a year. In February 2024, a Barcelona court found Alves guilty of sexual assault and sentenced him to four years and six months in prison. The court also ordered him to pay €150,000 in compensation and imposed additional restrictions.

Alves appealed the conviction. In March 2024, while that appeal was pending, he was released from prison after posting €1 million bail. He surrendered his Spanish and Brazilian passports and was subject to travel and reporting restrictions.

Acquittal on Appeal

On March 28, 2025, the Appeals Section of the High Court of Justice of Catalonia unanimously overturned Alves' conviction and acquitted him.

The appeals court concluded that the trial judgment contained significant deficiencies in its assessment of the evidence and that the evidence was insufficient to overcome Alves' presumption of innocence. Following the ruling, the court lifted the restrictions that had been imposed on him, and he recovered his passports.

The decision did not end the appellate process. Both Spanish prosecutors and the woman who made the accusation challenged the acquittal before Spain's Supreme Court. Prosecutors argued that the appeals court had improperly evaluated parts of the evidence and asked the Supreme Court to set aside the acquittal.

Personal Life

Alves has children from previous relationships. In 2008, he married Brazilian sports agent Dinorah Santana, with whom he has two children. They later divorced but maintained a professional relationship, with Santana at times representing him.

In 2017, Alves married Spanish model Joana Sanz. Their relationship received considerable public attention during his arrest, detention, and subsequent court proceedings.

Following his acquittal, Alves became increasingly involved in evangelical Christian events in Spain and publicly discussed religion and his personal experiences during appearances at churches and religious gatherings.
