Biography & Early Wealth Journey

Manning spent 16 years working in institutional equity sales at Howard Weil, specializing in the oil and gas industry. He later joined real estate investment and development firm AJ Capital Partners, where he became Principal and Senior Managing Director of Investor Relations. His work focuses on business development and relationships with the firm's investors. AJ Capital's portfolio has included Graduate Hotels, Marine & Lawn Hotels & Resorts, residential developments, and other hospitality and real estate ventures.

Cooper has also developed a television career built around the humor that distinguishes him from the more serious public personas of his quarterback brothers. He became known for "The Manning Hour" on Fox Sports and has appeared across the network's NFL coverage. He is also deeply involved with the Manning Passing Academy.

Cooper's own football career ended before it could begin at Ole Miss because of a diagnosis of spinal stenosis. The next generation of the family subsequently returned him to the center of the college football world. His son Arch Manning became one of the most highly recruited quarterbacks in the country before joining the University of Texas, where he eventually became the Longhorns' starting quarterback.

Early Life

Primary Income Streams & Multi-Million Contracts

Cooper Manning was born on March 6, 1974, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is the oldest child of Archie and Olivia Manning. Archie had starred at Ole Miss before being selected with the second overall pick in the 1971 NFL Draft and spending most of his 13-season NFL career with the New Orleans Saints. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989.

Cooper grew up immersed in football, but unlike his father and younger brothers, he played wide receiver rather than quarterback. At Isidore Newman School in New Orleans, he developed into an outstanding receiver and earned All-State honors twice. He also played on two state championship basketball teams.

During Cooper's senior football season, Peyton became Newman's starting quarterback. The brothers formed an effective quarterback-receiver combination, providing an early preview of Peyton's passing ability and establishing Cooper as a legitimate Division I prospect in his own right.

Spinal Stenosis and End of Football Career

Real Estate, Luxury Assets & Personal Investments

Cooper received scholarship offers from several major college football programs, including Texas and Virginia, but chose to follow his father to Ole Miss. He enrolled with plans to play wide receiver for the Rebels.

Before his college career could begin, Cooper started experiencing numbness in his fingers and toes. Medical testing revealed that he had spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal that can place pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. Doctors warned that continuing to play football could expose him to serious injury.

At just 18 years old, Cooper was forced to give up the sport. The diagnosis dramatically changed the direction of his life before he had played a college game.

Peyton later wore No. 18, Cooper's old number, throughout his own legendary college and NFL career. Cooper's experience also became an important part of the Manning family's story and was featured prominently in ESPN's 2013 documentary "The Book of Manning."

Howard Weil and Energy Business

After graduating from the University of Mississippi, Cooper entered the business world rather than pursuing a career directly connected to football. He joined Howard Weil in New Orleans and specialized in institutional equity sales focused on the oil and gas industry.

Manning spent 16 years at Howard Weil and became a partner in the firm. His work involved relationships with institutional investors and companies throughout the energy sector, giving him a career that was largely separate from the fame being accumulated by Peyton and Eli on the football field.

In 2005, Manning and several partners participated in the purchase of Howard Weil from Legg Mason. The business was subsequently sold to Canada's Scotiabank in 2012 and became known as Scotia Howard Weil. Cooper remained with the company through the transition before eventually moving into real estate investing.

AJ Capital Partners

In 2016, Manning joined AJ Capital Partners as a senior managing director. He subsequently became a Principal and Senior Managing Director of Investor Relations. His responsibilities have focused on new business development and cultivating relationships with the firm's investors.

AJ Capital is a real estate investment and development company specializing in hospitality, residential properties, and large mixed-use developments. Among its best-known creations was Graduate Hotels, a collection of hotels designed around major university communities in the United States and United Kingdom.

Graduate grew to more than 30 operating and development properties. In 2024, Hilton agreed to pay $210 million to acquire the worldwide rights to the Graduate Hotels brand. AJ Capital retained ownership of the existing hotel real estate, with the properties joining Hilton under long-term franchise agreements.

AJ Capital's other businesses have included Marine & Lawn Hotels & Resorts, Memoir Residential, Field & Stream Lodge Co., and major development projects in markets including Nashville, Miami, and college towns across the country. Manning's role has placed him at the investor-relations and business-development side of the firm's expansion.

Television Career

Cooper gradually developed a second career in sports television. His dry humor and willingness to make fun of both himself and his famous family made him a natural fit for less conventional football coverage.

Ahead of Super Bowl XLVII, he appeared on "The Dan Patrick Show" in a recurring segment called "Manning on the Street." He later joined Fox Sports and became known for "The Manning Hour," a comedy-oriented feature built around interviews, sketches, and interactions with players, coaches, and fans.

Manning has continued contributing to Fox's NFL programming and has also worked in radio, including football-season shows on WWL in New Orleans. Unlike Peyton and Eli, whose television work tends to center on analyzing the mechanics and strategy of football, Cooper has generally leaned into comedy and personality-driven segments.

He has also appeared in projects involving other members of the Manning family, including "Peyton's Places" and "College Bowl."

Manning Passing Academy

Cooper remains actively involved with the Manning Passing Academy, the football camp founded by Archie Manning in 1996. The camp has grown from fewer than 200 participants during its first year into one of the country's best-known instructional camps for high school quarterbacks, receivers, running backs, and tight ends.

Cooper serves as a senior associate director and has become one of the camp's primary personalities and emcees. Peyton and Eli also participate extensively, while many of the country's top college quarterbacks attend as counselors.

The Manning Passing Academy celebrated its 30th year in 2026. By that point, more than 30,000 high school athletes had participated in the program.

Arch Manning

Cooper's middle child, Arch Manning, extended the family's quarterback tradition into a third generation. Arch attended Isidore Newman, the same New Orleans school where Cooper, Peyton, and Eli had played, and became one of the most heavily recruited high school quarterbacks in the country.

Arch ultimately committed to the University of Texas and joined the Longhorns in 2023. He spent his early college seasons developing behind quarterback Quinn Ewers before taking over as the team's primary starter. His emergence turned Cooper from the Manning brother whose own football career had ended prematurely into the father of one of the most closely watched quarterbacks in college football.

Despite the enormous attention surrounding Arch, Cooper has generally tried to keep the recruiting and development process from becoming a family spectacle. Peyton and Eli have also spoken about deliberately allowing Cooper and Arch to manage the process themselves rather than attempting to direct his football decisions.

Personal Life

Cooper is married to Ellen Heidingsfelder Manning, whom he married in 1999. Ellen is an attorney and was an accomplished high school athlete in New Orleans, competing in volleyball, track and field, and soccer.

The couple has three children: daughter May and sons Arch and Heid. May played volleyball and later attended the University of Virginia. Heid played offensive line alongside Arch at Isidore Newman and later attended the University of Texas.

Cooper and his family have continued to live in New Orleans, maintaining close connections to Isidore Newman, local charitable organizations, and the wider Manning family's activities. He has also served on community and nonprofit boards and has been involved with organizations including the Manning Family Children's Hospital and The Idea Village.

Although Cooper never had the professional football career once envisioned for him, his path ultimately developed in a dramatically different direction from those of his younger brothers. He built a lengthy career in energy finance and real estate investing, developed his own television identity, and remained closely involved in football through the Manning Passing Academy and his son's career.
