His first major break came in 2011 when he and singer Emily Luther entered Perez Hilton's online competition "Can You Sing?" with a cover of Adele's "Someone Like You." They won the competition, and the performance caught the attention of Ellen DeGeneres, who signed the pair to her eleveneleven label.
Puth appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and released music through the label before leaving in 2012. He continued working independently, releasing the EP "Ego" in 2013 while also writing songs, producing tracks, and creating jingles for other performers and projects.
"See You Again"
Puth signed with Atlantic Records and released his debut major-label single, "Marvin Gaye," featuring Meghan Trainor, in 2015. The song became an international hit, reaching #1 in several countries and introducing Puth to a much larger audience.
Wealth Trajectory & Future Earnings Projections
His career changed dramatically that same year with "See You Again." Puth co-wrote the song and performed its chorus while Wiz Khalifa handled the verses. Created for the "Furious 7" soundtrack as a tribute to the late Paul Walker, the song became a global phenomenon.
"See You Again" spent 12 non-consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped charts around the world. It received three Grammy nominations, including Song of the Year, as well as a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song. The music video also became one of the most-watched videos in YouTube history.
"Nine Track Mind" and "Voicenotes"
Puth released his debut studio album, "Nine Track Mind," in January 2016. The album reached #6 on the Billboard 200 and included "Marvin Gaye," "One Call Away," and "We Don't Talk Anymore," a collaboration with Selena Gomez.
His second album, "Voicenotes," arrived in 2018 and represented a significant evolution in his sound and production style. Puth produced the album himself and leaned more heavily into funk, R&B, and sophisticated pop arrangements.
The album featured "Attention," which reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, along with "How Long" and "Done for Me." "Voicenotes" reached #4 on the Billboard 200 and further established Puth not simply as a pop singer but as an accomplished producer and arranger. He supported the record with the "Voicenotes Tour," which featured Hailee Steinfeld as a special guest.

Songwriting and Producing
Puth has generated a significant portion of his career success through songwriting and production work in addition to recording his own music. Early in his career, he worked on songs for Jason Derulo, CeeLo Green, Bonnie McKee, and other artists.
He later co-wrote and co-produced "Stay" for The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber. Released in 2021, the song became another enormous international hit and spent multiple weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Puth has also worked with artists including 5 Seconds of Summer, Gabby Barrett, Lil Wayne, Boyz II Men, G-Eazy, and Blackbear. His ability to identify melodies, reproduce sounds by ear, and build songs from small musical ideas has become an important part of his public persona, particularly through videos demonstrating his songwriting and production process.
"Charlie" and "Whatever's Clever!"
Puth released his third studio album, "Charlie," in 2022. The project included "Light Switch," "Smells Like Me," and "Left and Right," featuring Jungkook of BTS.
The album was created during a period when Puth increasingly shared his songwriting process on social media, often showing fans how individual sounds and fragments developed into finished songs. This approach helped him build an especially large following on TikTok while reinforcing his reputation as a technically skilled producer.
In 2026, Puth released his fourth studio album, "Whatever's Clever!" The project explored a more mature pop sound influenced by yacht rock, jazz, and the polished studio production of the 1970s and 1980s. Songs associated with the project included "Changes" and "Beat Yourself Up."
Earlier that year, Puth performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" before Super Bowl LX at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. He subsequently supported "Whatever's Clever!" with an international tour.

Personal Life
Puth has spoken publicly about the pressures that accompanied his rapid rise to fame. He previously revealed that he suffered a nervous breakdown while dealing with an intense workload, constant travel, and the loss of privacy that came with becoming internationally famous. He has frequently described songwriting and music-making as an important emotional outlet.
Charlie began dating Brooke Sansone, a childhood family friend, in 2022. They became engaged in 2023 and married on September 7, 2024, at Puth's family's estate in Montecito, California. The ceremony took place on the grounds of the property, which had become an important gathering place for the Puth family.
Charlie and Brooke later welcomed a son named Jude.
Real Estate
Puth has made several multimillion-dollar California real estate deals over the course of his career.
In 2015, Charlie paid approximately $1.9 million for a home in the Hollywood Hills. He later listed the property for around $2.2 million but ultimately sold it in 2018 for approximately $1.8 million.
In 2017, Puth paid $9 million for a mid-century modern mansion in the Trousdale Estates neighborhood of Beverly Hills. The roughly 4,800-square-foot property was designed by architect Rex Lotery and sits on approximately half an acre. Charlie listed the home in late 2023 for nearly $17 million before reducing the asking price several times. He ultimately sold it in 2024 for approximately $11 million to "Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles" star Josh Flagg.
Charlie also purchased a Studio City property in 2021 for approximately $1.5 million. He later listed the home for $2.9 million and sold it in May 2026 for $2.1 million.
$18.5 Million Montecito Mansion Sale
Puth's most lucrative known real estate investment was in Montecito, California. In 2017, he paid just $4.17 million for a gated estate encompassing approximately 5,920 square feet with six bedrooms and seven bathrooms.
The property later became especially meaningful to Charlie and Brooke because it was the site of their 2024 wedding. The couple held their ceremony and reception on the estate, describing Montecito as the ideal setting for the celebration.
In July 2026, Puth sold the property in an off-market transaction for $18.5 million. That's more than four times the $4.17 million he paid nine years earlier and represents a gross increase in value of approximately $14.3 million before accounting for renovations, taxes, commissions, carrying costs, and other expenses.
