Biography & Early Wealth Journey

Carlos Vela spent nearly two decades playing at the highest levels of professional soccer, with major stretches at Real Sociedad in Spain and Los Angeles FC in Major League Soccer. A technically gifted left-footed forward capable of playing as a winger, striker, or attacking midfielder, Vela became one of the most important players in LAFC history and produced one of the greatest individual seasons MLS has ever seen.

In 2019, Vela scored a league-record 34 regular-season goals while adding 15 assists, winning both the MLS Golden Boot and Landon Donovan MVP Award. He helped LAFC win Supporters' Shields in 2019 and 2022 and captained the club to its first MLS Cup championship in 2022. Before moving to the United States, Carlos made more than 200 appearances for Real Sociedad and played in England with Arsenal and West Bromwich Albion.

Vela also represented Mexico 72 times, scoring 19 goals and appearing at the 2010 and 2018 FIFA World Cups. He retired from professional soccer in 2025 as LAFC's career leader in appearances, goals, and assists. After retiring, Vela remained with the organization as an ambassador and in 2026 joined LAFC's ownership group.

Career Earnings

Primary Income Streams & Multi-Million Contracts

Vela earned tens of millions of dollars during his professional playing career. Publicly available MLS salary data indicate that he received approximately $32.9 million in total compensation from LAFC between 2018 and 2024.

During his first four MLS seasons, Vela's guaranteed annual compensation was approximately $6.3 million. His compensation declined later in his career, including roughly $4.05 million in 2022 and $3.34 million in 2023. When he returned late in the 2024 season after spending most of the year unsigned, his deal paid approximately $325,000.

Those figures do not include the money Vela earned during more than a decade in European soccer. He spent six full seasons with Real Sociedad after earlier contracts with Arsenal and loan spells in England and Spain.

Early Life

Real Estate, Luxury Assets & Personal Investments

Carlos Alberto Vela Garrido was born on March 1, 1989, in Cancún, Quintana Roo, Mexico. He grew up in a sports-oriented family and played soccer from a young age. His older brother, Alejandro Vela, also became a professional soccer player in Mexico.

Carlos joined the youth system of Guadalajara and quickly emerged as one of Mexico's most promising young attacking players. His first major international breakthrough came at the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship in Peru.

Vela scored five goals during the tournament, including the opening goal in Mexico's 3-0 victory over Brazil in the final. Mexico won its first U-17 World Cup title, and Vela received the Golden Boot as the tournament's leading scorer.

Arsenal and European Loans

Wealth Trajectory & Future Earnings Projections

Vela's performance at the U-17 World Cup attracted interest from major European clubs. Arsenal signed him in 2005 when he was still a teenager, but work-permit restrictions initially prevented him from playing professionally in England.

Arsenal subsequently sent Vela on loan to Spanish clubs. He spent the 2006-07 season with Salamanca in Spain's second division, scoring eight goals in 31 appearances, then played the following season with Osasuna in La Liga.

After becoming eligible to play in England, Vela finally joined Arsenal's first team under Arsène Wenger. He showed flashes of his talent, particularly in cup competitions, but struggled to establish himself as a regular starter in a deep attacking squad.

One of his most memorable Arsenal performances came in a League Cup match against Sheffield United in 2008, when he scored a hat trick. Vela ultimately made more than 60 appearances for Arsenal before spending part of the 2010-11 season on loan at West Bromwich Albion.

Real Sociedad

Vela found the stability that had eluded him in England when he joined Real Sociedad on loan in 2011. He immediately became one of the Spanish club's most important attacking players, and Real Sociedad made the transfer permanent in 2012.

Vela spent six seasons in San Sebastián and produced some of the best soccer of his career. He formed an especially effective attacking partnership with a young Antoine Griezmann, and the pair helped Real Sociedad qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Carlos was named Real Sociedad's Player of the Year for the 2011-12 and 2013-14 seasons. He also earned La Liga Player of the Month honors twice. By the time he left the club, he had made more than 200 appearances across all competitions and scored 72 goals.

Although Vela possessed enough talent to remain in one of Europe's major leagues, he had long been open about viewing soccer as his profession rather than an all-consuming passion. The lifestyle and opportunity offered by Los Angeles ultimately proved attractive.

Move to LAFC

In August 2017, the newly formed Los Angeles Football Club announced Vela as the first Designated Player in franchise history. He remained with Real Sociedad through the end of the year before officially joining LAFC for its inaugural MLS season in 2018.

Vela immediately became the face of the expansion franchise. In LAFC's debut season, he scored 14 regular-season goals and recorded 13 assists while helping the club reach the playoffs. He was named to the MLS Best XI and selected as an All-Star.

His arrival was particularly significant in Los Angeles, which has one of the largest Mexican and Mexican-American populations of any city in the United States. Vela gave the new franchise an established Mexican international star around whom it could build both its team and its identity.

Historic 2019 MVP Season

Vela produced an extraordinary season in 2019. He scored 34 goals in 31 regular-season matches, breaking the MLS single-season scoring record previously held by Josef Martínez.

Carlos also contributed 15 assists, giving him a then-record 49 combined goals and assists. His 1.10 goals-per-game rate remains one of the best scoring marks in MLS history.

The Golden Boot race attracted additional attention because Vela was competing with LA Galaxy superstar Zlatan Ibrahimović, who scored 30 goals. Vela ultimately finished four goals ahead and was overwhelmingly selected as the Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player.

LAFC won the Supporters' Shield with what was then an MLS-record 72 points. Although the team fell short of winning the MLS Cup, Vela's 2019 campaign established him as one of the greatest players in league history.

Injuries and Champions League

Vela's momentum was interrupted during the COVID-shortened 2020 season, when injuries limited his appearances. He nevertheless returned in time to help LAFC make a deep run in the CONCACAF Champions League.

LAFC defeated Mexican clubs León, Cruz Azul, and Club América before losing to Tigres UANL in the final. Vela was named to the competition's Best XI.

Injuries again affected portions of his 2021 season, but he remained the centerpiece of LAFC as the club prepared for another championship push.

2022 MLS Cup Championship

Vela re-signed with LAFC during the 2022 season and helped lead the club to its most successful year. LAFC won its second Supporters' Shield and advanced to the MLS Cup final.

The championship match against the Philadelphia Union became one of the most dramatic games in MLS history. The teams finished extra time tied 3-3 before LAFC won the penalty shootout.

The title gave Vela his first MLS Cup championship. The roster also featured international stars including Gareth Bale and Giorgio Chiellini, both of whom had cited LAFC's growing reputation as an attraction.

Vela was again named to the MLS Best XI in 2022.

Final Seasons and Retirement

Vela remained a major contributor in 2023, appearing in a career-high 34 MLS regular-season games. Across all competitions, he played 48 matches and recorded 14 goals and 12 assists as LAFC reached both the CONCACAF Champions League final and another MLS Cup final.

His contract expired after the 2023 season, and Vela spent most of 2024 away from the club. LAFC re-signed him in September for the final portion of the season. He made only a handful of appearances but was part of the squad that won the 2024 U.S. Open Cup.

LAFC declined his option for 2025 while continuing discussions about his future. Vela ultimately announced his retirement in May 2025, ending a 19-year professional career.

He finished his LAFC playing career as the club's all-time leader with 152 MLS appearances and 78 goals. He also became the fastest player in MLS history to accumulate at least 75 goals and 50 assists.

LAFC Ownership

Vela did not sever his relationship with LAFC after retirement. The club named him its first Black & Gold Ambassador, a role involving appearances, fan engagement, and representing the organization internationally.

In September 2025, LAFC made Vela the first inductee into the club's Ring of Honor.

In 2026, Vela took the relationship a major step further by joining LAFC's ownership group. The size and financial terms of his investment were not publicly disclosed. The move made him one of a relatively small group of former professional athletes to become an owner of the franchise with which they were most closely associated.

Mexico National Team

Vela made his senior debut for Mexico in 2007. He went on to earn 72 international appearances and score 19 goals.

He helped Mexico win the CONCACAF Gold Cup in both 2009 and 2015 and was part of the squad that won the 2015 CONCACAF Cup. Vela appeared at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa but later spent several years away from the national team.

He returned to international competition and represented Mexico at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Vela started all four of Mexico's matches and scored a penalty in a 2-1 group-stage victory over South Korea.

The 2018 tournament proved to be the final major international competition of his career. He subsequently stepped away from the national team, finishing with one of the more complicated but successful international careers among Mexican players of his generation.

Personal Life

Vela is married to Saioa Cañibano, who is from Spain's Basque region. The couple met during Vela's years playing for Real Sociedad in San Sebastián.

Carlos and Saioa have two children, a son named Romeo and a daughter named India. The family settled in Los Angeles during Vela's years with LAFC and remained there after his retirement.

Away from soccer, Vela is an enthusiastic basketball fan and has frequently spoken about enjoying the NBA. His affection for basketball became a running theme during his years in Los Angeles and was something he shared with former Real Sociedad teammate Antoine Griezmann.
