Biography & Early Wealth Journey
Bret Taylor has played a remarkable role in several of Silicon Valley's most important companies and products. He co-created Google Maps, co-founded the social network FriendFeed, served as chief technology officer of Facebook, founded workplace collaboration company Quip, and ultimately rose to become co-CEO of Salesforce alongside Marc Benioff. He also served as chairman of Twitter during Elon Musk's tumultuous $44 billion takeover of the company.
Taylor later emerged as a major figure in the artificial intelligence industry. He became chairman of OpenAI's board in late 2023 and co-founded enterprise AI company Sierra with former Google executive Clay Bavor. Sierra's valuation rose from less than $1 billion in early 2024 to $4.5 billion later that year, $10 billion in 2025 and $15.8 billion following a $950 million funding round in 2026. Taylor has been estimated to own roughly one-quarter of the company. In late 2025, he also joined the ownership group of the San Francisco 49ers by acquiring approximately 1% of the NFL franchise in a transaction that valued the team at more than $9 billion.
Early Life and Education
Bret Steven Taylor was born on July 10, 1980, in Oakland, California, and grew up primarily in the East Bay. His father founded a heating and ventilation engineering company, while his mother worked in marketing at Chevron before starting a tourism business.
Primary Income Streams & Multi-Million Contracts
Taylor attended Acalanes High School in Lafayette, California, and graduated in 1998. As a teenager, he worked at a gas station before discovering that designing websites for local businesses was considerably more lucrative.
He went on to Stanford University, earning a bachelor's degree in computer science in 2002 and a master's degree in computer science in 2003.
Google and Google Maps
Taylor began his technology career at Google, where he entered the company's associate product manager program under Marissa Mayer.

He became involved in Google's local-search products and led a team that helped create what ultimately became Google Maps. Taylor is widely credited as one of the product's co-creators, giving him an unusually significant accomplishment at the very beginning of his career.
Google Maps launched in 2005 and eventually became one of Google's most widely used consumer products.
Taylor left Google in 2007 and became an entrepreneur-in-residence at venture capital firm Benchmark Capital.
FriendFeed and Facebook
Wealth Trajectory & Future Earnings Projections
Taylor teamed with fellow former Google employees Paul Buchheit, Jim Norris and Sanjeev Singh to create FriendFeed, a social networking and content-sharing service launched in 2007.
FriendFeed allowed users to aggregate updates from multiple websites into a single feed and introduced features that influenced the development of larger social networks. Facebook acquired FriendFeed in 2009 in a deal reportedly worth roughly $50 million in cash and stock.
The acquisition brought Taylor to Facebook. He initially worked on the company's platform products and became chief technology officer in 2010.
As CTO, Taylor helped oversee Facebook's rapidly expanding technology infrastructure and products during a crucial period in the company's history. He remained with Facebook through its blockbuster 2012 initial public offering before leaving later that year to return to entrepreneurship.

Quip and Salesforce
In 2012, Taylor and fellow former Google employee Kevin Gibbs founded Quip, a cloud-based productivity company designed to rethink word processing, spreadsheets and workplace collaboration for smartphones and tablets.
Quip attracted prominent venture investors and developed a workplace productivity platform combining documents, spreadsheets, messaging and collaboration.
Salesforce acquired Quip in 2016. Regulatory filings placed the value of the stock being issued to Quip shareholders at roughly $582 million, while the overall transaction was widely reported at approximately $750 million when additional consideration was included.
Taylor joined Salesforce through the acquisition and quickly climbed the corporate hierarchy.
He became president and chief product officer in 2017 and president and chief operating officer in 2019. In November 2021, Salesforce promoted Taylor to vice chairman and co-CEO alongside founder Marc Benioff.
Taylor was among the company's highest-paid executives. His reported Salesforce compensation totaled $13.9 million for fiscal 2021, $22.8 million for fiscal 2022 and $26.8 million for fiscal 2023, with much of the compensation coming in stock and option awards.
Taylor announced his departure from Salesforce in late 2022 and officially left the company in January 2023.
Twitter and OpenAI
Taylor joined Twitter's board in 2016 and became chairman in 2021.
That position placed him at the center of Elon Musk's attempt to acquire Twitter in 2022. After agreeing to purchase the company for $44 billion, Musk attempted to terminate the transaction. Twitter sued to enforce the merger agreement, and Musk ultimately completed the acquisition in October 2022.
Taylor's Twitter board service ended when the company became privately held.
In November 2023, Taylor became chairman of OpenAI's board as part of the leadership restructuring that returned Sam Altman to the CEO position following several days of upheaval at the artificial intelligence company.
Taylor subsequently helped oversee the rebuilding and expansion of OpenAI's board and remained chairman as the company dramatically expanded its operations and restructured its corporate organization.
Sierra
After leaving Salesforce, Taylor reunited with longtime Google executive Clay Bavor to create Sierra, an artificial intelligence company focused on building autonomous AI agents for businesses.
Sierra's software allows companies to deploy AI agents capable of handling customer interactions and completing tasks such as processing returns, changing reservations, resolving account issues and working with existing corporate systems.
Investor enthusiasm was immediate.
Sierra raised $110 million at a valuation of nearly $1 billion in early 2024. In October 2024, another $175 million financing valued the company at $4.5 billion.
By September 2025, Sierra had raised $350 million at a $10 billion valuation. That financing officially made Taylor and Bavor billionaires, with each founder estimated to own roughly one-quarter of the company.
Sierra continued growing at an extraordinary pace. In May 2026, the company announced a $950 million financing led by Tiger Global and GV at a post-money valuation of $15.8 billion. Sierra said its technology was being used by more than 40% of Fortune 50 companies.
San Francisco 49ers Ownership
In late 2025, Taylor became a minority owner of the San Francisco 49ers.
Taylor acquired approximately 1% of the team from the York family. The transaction valued the franchise at more than $9 billion, implying that Taylor's stake was worth more than $90 million.
The investment made Taylor one of several prominent Silicon Valley figures to join the 49ers' ownership group as the York family began selling small minority interests while retaining control of the franchise.
Personal Life
Taylor married Karen Padham in 2006. The two met while working at Google and have three children.
In addition to his positions at Sierra and OpenAI, Taylor has served on the board of Shopify and has invested in a number of technology companies during his career.
