Biography & Early Wealth Journey

Baker Mayfield won the Heisman Trophy at Oklahoma before becoming the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. After an up-and-down tenure with the Cleveland Browns and brief stops with the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams, Mayfield resurrected his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He led Tampa Bay to consecutive division titles, earned two Pro Bowl selections and parlayed an inexpensive one-year "prove-it" contract into increasingly lucrative long-term deals. In March 2024, Mayfield signed a three-year, $100 million contract with Tampa Bay. In September 2026, with one season still remaining on that agreement, the Buccaneers signed him to a three-year, $165 million extension that averages $55 million per year and keeps him under contract through 2029.

Mayfield earned more than $130 million in NFL salary and bonuses through the 2025 season, with another $40 million scheduled under his existing contract in 2026. If he earns the full value of his new extension, his career NFL earnings will surpass $330 million by the end of 2029.

Contracts, Salary & Career Earnings

As the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Baker signed a four-year, $32.68 million rookie contract with Cleveland that was fully guaranteed and included a $21.85 million signing bonus. The Browns subsequently exercised his fifth-year option for 2022.

Primary Income Streams & Multi-Million Contracts

After being traded by Cleveland and splitting the 2022 season between Carolina and Los Angeles, Mayfield's market value collapsed. In March 2023, he accepted a one-year contract with Tampa Bay carrying a base value of just $4 million and another $4.5 million in potential incentives. He ultimately earned roughly $6.85 million that season while dramatically rebuilding his value.

In March 2024, Baker and Tampa Bay signed a three-year, $100 million contract with $50 million in guarantees and another $15 million available through incentives. He collected roughly $32.5 million in 2024 and $44 million in 2025. His 2026 compensation under that agreement was scheduled at approximately $40 million.

In September 2026, just before the start of the regular season, Mayfield agreed to a new three-year, $165 million extension with the Buccaneers. The deal averages $55 million per season and covers the 2027 through 2029 seasons. The agreement represented another remarkable step in Mayfield's financial comeback: three years earlier, he had arrived in Tampa on a contract worth just $4 million before incentives.

Through the end of 2025, Mayfield had earned approximately $132 million during his NFL career. Including his scheduled 2026 compensation, that figure rises to roughly $172 million. If he collects the full $165 million extension, his cumulative NFL earnings will exceed $330 million by the end of 2029.

Family Financial Dispute

In August 2023, Mayfield and his wife, Emily, filed a petition in an Austin, Texas, court seeking financial records and depositions from several businesses connected to investments they had made between 2018 and 2023. Two of the companies were associated with Baker's father, James Mayfield, while his brother Matt also worked in the family businesses.

The Mayfields eventually alleged that more than $12 million had been transferred from their accounts between 2018 and 2021 without proper authorization, documentation or accounting. According to subsequent court filings, the money was used to help finance businesses connected to Camwood Capital Management Group.

The parties reached a confidential settlement in January 2024 under which Camwood was supposed to repay the Mayfields $11.741 million plus interest. In November 2024, Baker, Emily and their company, Team BRM LLC, filed a federal lawsuit alleging that Camwood and several affiliated companies had failed to make the required payments, refinance an existing loan or provide access to financial records as required by the settlement.

Wealth Trajectory & Future Earnings Projections

The lawsuit sought repayment of the $11.741 million plus interest. It was voluntarily dismissed in March 2025, and the terms surrounding the dismissal were not publicly disclosed. By 2026, Baker said he had begun reconnecting with his family and described the relationship as making significant progress.

Early Life

Baker Reagan Mayfield was born on April 14, 1995, in Austin, Texas. He is the son of Gina and James Mayfield and has an older brother, Matt.

Baker played quarterback at Lake Travis High School, leading the Cavaliers to a 25-2 record over two seasons and the 2011 Texas Class 4A state championship. He finished his high school career with 6,255 passing yards, 67 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Despite that success, he was only a three-star recruit and ultimately began his college career as a walk-on at Texas Tech.

College Football

In 2013, Mayfield became the first walk-on true freshman quarterback to start an FBS season opener. In his Texas Tech debut, he threw for 413 yards and four touchdowns and was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week. He finished the season with 2,315 passing yards and 12 touchdowns before leaving the program.

Mayfield transferred to the University of Oklahoma and again joined the team as a walk-on. After sitting out a season because of Big 12 transfer rules, he won the starting quarterback job in 2015. He led Oklahoma to the College Football Playoff and the Orange Bowl that season.

In 2016, Mayfield guided the Sooners to another Big 12 championship and a Sugar Bowl victory over Auburn, earning game MVP honors. Oklahoma won a third consecutive conference title in 2017 and reached the College Football Playoff again, losing a 54-48 double-overtime thriller to Georgia in the Rose Bowl semifinal.

Mayfield capped his college career by winning the 2017 Heisman Trophy with 732 first-place votes and 2,398 total points. He became the first former walk-on to win the award.

Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns selected Mayfield with the first overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. He made his regular-season debut in Week 3 against the New York Jets, replacing an injured Tyrod Taylor and helping erase a 14-0 deficit in a 21-17 victory. Mayfield soon took over the starting job for a franchise that had gone 1-31 during the previous two seasons.

As a rookie, he threw for 3,725 yards and 27 touchdowns, at the time setting the NFL rookie record for touchdown passes despite starting only 13 games. Cleveland improved to 7-8-1.

After a disappointing 2019 season, Mayfield and the Browns broke through in 2020. He threw for 3,563 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions while helping Cleveland finish 11-5 and reach the playoffs for the first time since 2002. The Browns defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card Round before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round.

Mayfield's final season as Cleveland's starter was derailed by injuries. He suffered a partially torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder early in the 2021 season and continued playing while wearing a shoulder harness. He later fractured a bone in the same shoulder and underwent surgery after the season.

Cleveland subsequently acquired Deshaun Watson, effectively ending Mayfield's tenure with the Browns.

Carolina, Los Angeles & Tampa Bay Revival

Cleveland traded Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers in July 2022. He struggled in Carolina, lost the starting job and was released at his request in December.

The Los Angeles Rams claimed him off waivers. Less than two days after joining the team, Mayfield came off the bench against the Las Vegas Raiders and engineered a 98-yard game-winning touchdown drive, providing one of the memorable moments of his otherwise turbulent 2022 season.

Tampa Bay gave Mayfield a chance to replace the retired Tom Brady in 2023. He responded with what was then the best season of his NFL career, passing for 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns. The Buccaneers won the NFC South, defeated Philadelphia in the playoffs and advanced to the divisional round. Mayfield earned his first Pro Bowl selection.

He was even better statistically in 2024, throwing for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns while completing 71.4% of his passes. Tampa Bay won another NFC South title, and Mayfield earned his second consecutive Pro Bowl selection.

Mayfield threw for 3,693 yards and 26 touchdowns in 2025. Tampa Bay finished 8-9 and missed the playoffs, but the organization remained committed to him as its long-term quarterback. That commitment culminated in his three-year, $165 million extension in 2026.

2017 Arrest

In February 2017, while still at Oklahoma, Mayfield was arrested in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on charges including public intoxication, disorderly conduct, fleeing and resisting arrest. Police said Mayfield attempted to run from officers before being tackled.

Mayfield later accepted a plea agreement on misdemeanor charges of public intoxication, fleeing and disorderly conduct. The resisting-arrest charge was dropped. He was fined and, as part of discipline imposed by Oklahoma, completed 35 hours of community service and an alcohol education program.

Uber Driving

Mayfield's path to becoming one of the NFL's highest-paid quarterbacks included an unusual side job. After transferring from Texas Tech to Oklahoma, when he was once again a walk-on with no guarantee of becoming the Sooners' starting quarterback, Baker spent time driving for Uber around Norman.

Stories and screenshots from passengers later circulated online showing that future Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield had, for a period, been their Uber driver.

Personal Life

Baker married Emily Wilkinson in July 2019. They have two children, a daughter named Kova and a son named Maverick.
