Early Life

Annette O'Toole was born Annette Toole on April 1, 1952, in Houston, Texas. She is the daughter of William West Toole Jr. and Dorothy Niland. Dorothy taught dance, and Annette began learning when she was three years old. At the age of 13, she moved to Los Angeles with her family and began taking acting lessons.

Career

O'Toole made her TV debut in a 1967 episode of "The Danny Kaye Show," then she guest-starred on "My Three Sons" (1967), "This Is the Life" (1967), "The Virginian" (1970), "Gunsmoke" (1970), "The Mod Squad" (1971), "The Partridge Family" (1971), "Hawaii Five-O" (1971), "The F.B.I." (1974), "Police Woman" (1974), "S.W.A.T." (1975), "Serpico" (1976), and "Barnaby Jones" (1976). She also appeared in the films "Smile" (1975), "One on One" (1977), and "King of the Gypsies" (1978) and the TV movies "The Girl Most Likely to…" (1973), "The Entertainer" (1975), "The War Between the Tates" (1977), and "Love for Rent" (1979). Annette began the '80s with a role in the film "Foolin' Around," and she followed it with "Cat People" (1982), "48 Hrs." (1982), and "Cross My Heart" (1987) and played Lana Lang in 1983's "Superman III." She portrayed country singer Tammy Wynette in the 1981 TV movie "Stand by Your Man" and Betsy North in the 1989 miniseries "Guts and Glory: The Rise and Fall of Oliver North," and she starred in the TV movies "The Best Legs in the Eighth Grade" (1984), "Bridge to Terabithia" (1985), "Copacabana" (1985), "Strong Medicine" (1986), and "Broken Vows" (1987).

O'Toole and her husband, Michael McKean, co-wrote three songs for the 2003 Christopher Guest mockumentary "A Mighty Wind," with "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" earning an Academy Award nomination.

Personal Life

In the '70s, Annette dated actor Bruno Kirby. She was married to actor Bill Geisslinger from 1983 to 1993, and they had two daughters, Nell and Anna, together. O'Toole met Michael McKean on the set of the 1998 TV movie "Final Justice," and they married on March 20, 1999, making Annette stepmother to Colin and Fletcher, Michael's sons from his marriage to Susan Russell. Sadly, Colin passed away in 2012.

Awards and Nominations

In 2004, O'Toole and McKean received an Academy Award nomination for Best Music, Original Song for "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" from "A Mighty Wind." The song also earned the duo a Gold Derby Award as well as nominations from the Satellite Awards and Online Film & Television Association Awards. "A Mighty Wind" won a Best Music award from the Seattle Film Critics Awards. For "The Kennedys of Massachusetts," Annette received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Special and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television. In 1984, she earned a Saturn Award nomination (from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films) for Best Supporting Actress for "Superman III." O'Toole was named Best Actress for "Temptation" at the 2002 New York International Independent Film & Video Festival, and in 2005, she shared a Teen Choice Award nomination for Choice TV Parental Units with her "Smallville" co-star John Schneider.
